Is it just a rat-race joke?

Yeah but really, is it just a rat-race joke? Or just an oddly-executed commentary on human family economics?

I have to say I was a little put off from the whole picture by taking the rack of environments to be a bakery display case. But then what is this place? A lab? A pet store? Neither one should be recruiting their subjects from a handy nearby mousehole!

  1. I’m guessing it has something to do with being a pet vs. being a wild mouse. She was only going to do it for the free food, but now she’s a pet.

Maybe. I mean, it’s Six Chix after all, the point could be anything or nothing.

  2. The multi-level cages remind me of an office building, so I think it is someone who planned to work part time winding up working full time because of “emergencies.”
Let’s just hope the mouse in the cage isn’t on salary.

  3. they SHOULDN’T be getting their mice from a convenient mousehole…. but “should” is a very strong word…

  4. Is it just a “rat race” joke? I don’t think it is even that much.

I think it’s just a joke about people who complain the spouse works more than she says she will (basically what Scott says). The cartoonist thought it be funny if it was a mouse in a wheel. I don’t think the idea of “rat race” entered into it at all.

As for where they are I first thought a bakery too. If anything it’s a pet store. Now as to why a house pest mouse would commute to work as a pet store mouse for sale…. this is six chix– expecting logical consistency here is the way to madness.

Yes, and also that’s what was intended in the posting text asking Or just an oddly-executed commentary on human family economics?.

  6. The rat on the wheel is in a glass cage; part of the joke might just be that the wall-rat doesn’t realize she can’t leave…
