Keeping things current?

This comic ended in 2012, and is in reruns. But apparently someone is working to update the comics, and keep the date “right.”

I have mixed feelings about this. On the one hand, I’m impressed that they’re keeping things in sync enough that a post-New Years comic is running a little after January 1st, and that someone is actually reading the comic and noticing that the year needs updating. On the other hand, I find it a little jarring to see the date changed on old comics to makes storylines “recent,” when I remember them occurring a decade ago. And on the gripping hand, I find it immensely jarring to see these characters discussing how “a lot happened in 2020,” and not including the most prominent and obvious thing that happened in 2020.

What do you think?

(And as a side note: Does listing all the things that happened during the year seem like a strange response to “Where did [the year] go?”)

  1. Well, … there were Sept. 11ths before 2001. (My stepsister was born on the one in 1962)….

1967 – China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) launched an attack on Indian posts at Nathu La, Sikkim, India, which resulted a military clashes.
1968 – Air France Flight 1611 crashes off Nice, France, killing 89 passengers and six crew.

….so maybe Red is very sad about Air France…..

(okay, I’ll admit that is stretching it….)

But okay…. just because a strip appears be in an era doesn’t mean it is.

  2. Original NCIS had a few new episodes before Christmas – Nov 17 & 24 and Dec 8 – then jumped to reruns. There have been 3 new episodes in January including tonight’s (Tuesday).

They are not mentioning Covid or pandemic, etc.

On the other hand, as the corona virus was starting to take hold “New Amsterdam” had to drop an episode last season in which (by odd coincidence) NYC is hit by pandemic – filmed before it actually was.

Most of the medical dramas which Robert watches have the pandemic at the forefront (one of them – “The Good Doctor” which films in Canada actually had a lead actor and his wife – a secondary actor in the show – actually come down with Covid and for one episode it was written into the plot before they disappeared from the show temporarily and they filmed that episode from home (or they filmed that episode from home before they got actually got sick and and it was a coincidence).
