Are Schools Being Turned Into ”Immigration Cops”?

About Those Rubrics

Okay, I’m with the teacher here: The strip doesn’t even begin to exaggerate how anal some of them are about what they ask for for — but as long as their analities are spelling out ahead of time (and they don’t involve impossible requirements), I don’t see a problem.

On the other hand (going off-topic a bit), my younger son’s fourth-grade teacher would have given him a low grade for this project even if he’d followed the rubric perfectly, since it was her belief that parents should do most of the work on a student’s project. Not “It’s okay for parents to do most of the work,” but “Parents are expected to do most of the work, and my grading system reflects the expectation of parent-quality work.”

Really.

And I’m not just saying this was her belief — She actually told me this explicitly, criticizing me for letting my son create his project on his own. I even asked her to repeat herself, on the off-chance that I’d misunderstood.

I’ve always wondered why it’s acceptable (and in this nutjob’s case mandatory) for parents to make their kids’ science projects for them, but not for parents to write their kids’ essays for them. I am, after all, a much better writer than I am a Styrofoam solar system creator, so why is it “irresponsible” for my kid not to use me “as a resource” (quoting that teacher) in science, but not in English?

Got…?

In the Funkyverse nobody drinks milk in high school? Because in the real world, especially with most schools banning a lot of sugary drinks, milk might not be the most popular drink, but it wouldn’t elicit this sort of reaction.

Or is Summer making the opposite point, that she’s incredulous that milk had been invented as long ago as Les’s high school days?

Heart of the School

Three people sent me this one before lunchtime, so I figured I might as well put it online:

Mr. Barnes switched from being the music teacher to being the football coach as a way of increasing his job security, since schools are going to drop their music programs way before they drop their football programs.

Of course the joke would have worked better if Heart and Dean weren’t second-graders, since I’ve yet to come across an elementary school with its own football team (though I wouldn’t be surprised to be told that Texas elementary schools have them). Cartoonists should have a Gag Exchange Program, where if Mark Tatulli has an idea that’s better suited to a high school strip, Archie can use it, and if the Archie writers come up with a storyline too relentlessly grim for Riverdale High, they can pass it along to Westview High.

The kid added some words to his mother’s note. Got it. But I don’t get it.

The Calling Tree

Laurie Wylie: My company has a very detailed Emergency Plan in case of a natural or man-made disaster (instituted after 9-11). It applies for anything that would cause the office to shut down, from terrorist attacks down to bad winter weather, electrical outages, fire, or, I assume, if a disgruntled employee came charging into the office with guns blazing. All of these things are facts of life these days, and any company or school needs to be prepared…Anyway… part of that plan is a phone tree, which the Admin in charge of each business group is responsible for updating. Communications are the biggest part of the plan, as a matter of fact, so this is an important task. So what is the joke in this strip?

Follow-up from Laurie: Continue Reading »
