This short article, just added to the CJA archives, was written for my newspaper column in 2006 (remember newspapers? an enjoyable manner of receiving information, but seriously lacking in interactivity). The question is still relevant, of course — I probably could have rewritten the same piece each year since with different names plugged in — and I was wondering what you all thought.

I got to speak with former Los Angeles detective Mark Fuhrman a few years ago. No, we didn’t discuss the O.J. Simpson case, but we did get into the death penalty — specifically the way Oklahoma prosecutors were fast-tracking men to Death Row. And then we got to other then-current murder trials such as the Scott and Laci Peterson case. And Michael Jackson. And prison rodeos.
The interview

From AP: Guest: Many wept during Jackson’s Calif. funeral
See, not only is it news that people wept at a funeral, but as responsible journalists, AP even found somebody to attribute this fact to.

Nicole: Personally I have no problem remembering that MJ was a deeply troubled individual — but this is just gross

This probably is one of the best epitaphs for Michael Jackson, even if Ms. Montague-Reyes apparently jumbled the words epitaph and epithet in her head. Which is kind of funny in itself since two comics down on her homepage, we see this…

… the ending of which, by the way, I don’t entirely get.

The singer’s upcoming 50 concerts will make him rich again — if he holds up”
Thus begins one of the lead articles in the July 9 Rolling Stone, which hit the stands today. I don’t know, this just seems like way too long a lead time for a weekly magazine.

The top Jacko-related story Wednesday was that his will didn’t leave anything to ex-wife Debbie Rowe. Is it common to leave money to ex-spouses?
This certainly can’t be a case of “they ran out of things to write about,” because there’s certainly no shortage of rumor and speculation still to be mined.

All the recent talk about famous people dying in threes (though it’s unclear who’s supposed to be the third celebrity along with Farrah Fawcett and Michael Jackson — sort of like all the various candidates for the “Fifth Beatle” or the “Eighth Wonder of the World”) calls to mind this Far Left Side comic from earlier this year:

Newsweek might have gone through a format change, but the editing still seems to be non-existent: not just the grammatical errors, but also the bits of writing that just don’t make any sense.
In the current issue, a writer mentions Michael Jackson’s extensive plastic surgery and then adds “No one — least of all Jackson himself — would have wanted to see the Dorian Gray portrait in his attic.”
Um… Wouldn’t the portrait in the attic show a good-looking black guy? It was the real-life version that became increasingly bizarre-looking over the years.

Just wondering, as I read all these loving words about Michael Jackson from all his “lifelong friends”… Where exactly were all these people when Jackson was on trial for child molestation? Elizabeth Taylor was vocal in her support for him, but we didn’t hear much from all the other “friends” who are eager to get their eulogies on record.

Over the past 30 years, has a single African-American been in the news in any context at all without either Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton trying to insert himself into the story?
