When I placed this in the queue a few weeks ago, I had no idea what they were talking about. In the interim, I read
The Audacity to Win, which discussed the fact that President Obama is seriously bowling-challenged. So this is no longer a CIDU, but a question remains: Is Obama’s inability to knock down tenpins common enough knowledge to make this comic work?

Maybe somebody can remember something that I can’t: I’ve had digital watches that also served as simple calculators; but have there ever been calculators that told time?

Eh, not really a great bit of synchronicity, I guess. Though as long as I’m here, I was wondering… Do any west-coast parents let their younger kids watch the Times Square ball fall at 9pm local time, convince the young’uns that they’ve stayed up until midnight, and then herd them into bed?
Elyrest: Here’s one to throw into your New Year’s Eve Time Zone Synchronicity. It even deals with the ball falling in another time zone. The strip’s “
Home and Away”

Just wondering… Why is this specific scenario taken for granted by both Hi and the garbage man. Not that I particularly see the gag here in any case. Actually, if I were Hi, I’d be less concerned that one of the neighbors had a divorce lawyer’s business card than the fact that the garbage man sifts through everybody’s garbage thoroughly enough to find that business card.

My kid made exactly the same comment to me a few years ago and believe it or not, I didn’t get all all googly-eyed over it (though at least Hi didn’t react the way Elly Patterson would, chasing Chip around the kitchen in a murderous rage). As I recall I agreed with him (because it’s true) and reminded him that life’s a bitch.

Because of Obama-induced irrational exuberance? If so, has anybody ever thought of Presidents Day as referring to a current president?

Yeah, there are fewer tellers now that there are fewer walk-in customers. Makes sense, I’d say. What’s the gag here?

Powers: Today’s Hi and Lois is another “Global Warming” gag, but it’s not clear whether Lois is falling into the same trap as so many others, or if she really does know better and is intentionally making a joke.
