Honoring Dad and Gramma

Cidu Bill on Jun 21st 2009

Seriously, when you get teachers sending messages like “Happy Father’s Day to all the dad’s out there,” it might just be time to write off the English language entirely. I mean, up to a point, I could think, “Well, the upside is that a good editor will always be able to make a living, since nobody knows the basic principles of writing anymore” — but past that point, you realize that functional illiteracy is becoming more acceptable and that the ability to correct other people’s writing will soon be as valued as the ability to manufacture buggy whips.

Okay, just for the record, I was an English major and I’m currently an editor, and I feel so strongly about the fewer/less business that I’ve been known to scream at the television screen when I hear somebody getting it wrong.
All this being said, though, I’ve never had any problem accepting “10 items or less” as an idiomatic expression.

…people that say ”people that” instead of ”people who”…

Yes, I know that “people that” is very common, especially in the midwest… but it bugs the hell out of me and one of the perks of being an editor is that I get to change it. The Official Bill Bickel Style Guide. This is not a CIDU of course.
