I don’t have an actual Ewww comic for today, but I suspect that any explanation for this one will be suitably unpleasant.

A few weeks ago, on the CJA site, I posted an interview about the failings of campus security in dealing with assault and sexual assault cases. This morning, taking a break from typing it up for the magazine’s print edition, I saw this in David Willis’s Dumbing of Age:

It’s odd when you meet artists who occasionally draw themselves into their own strips, because you don’t always know what to expect: David Willis looked so much like the “David Willis” character that if I’d passed him in the street, I’d probably have thought “Wow, that guy looks a lot like David Willis. Or maybe Walky.”
Randy Mulholland, on the other hand, looks nothing like “Randy Mulholland.”
Francesco Marciulano also looked nothing like “Medium Large Guy” — but to be fair, he never explicitly said this character was supposed to be his stand-in.
This all comes to mind because I’m planning to meet up with Zack Weiner tomorrow at NYCC, and he frequently draws himself into his strip — and I’m just hoping he won’t be sitting behind his table naked.

What Joyce’s father says to her in the fourth panel is virtually word for word what I said to my son the first time we took a college tour.

I was reminded of just how old I am when I met Shortpacked’s David Willis at the Wild Pig Comic Con in Springfield, NJ Saturday afternoon. My wife came along for a single reason: to tell David she’s a great fan of the Batman gags he writes into his strip. He drew her this

I’ll finally see whether David Willis really does look like Walky.

It’s one for the Ewww Files, but I don’t get it. And I Arlo’ed it because it might offend. Continue Reading »

This Luann strip
was followed by this Shortpacked parody
which in turn was followed by today’s Luann:

Okay, I’m done. Tom Batiuk has clearly made a fetish out of tragedy and death, and this depressionfest has become no more than a vehicle for him to work out his issues.
I don’t really believe he’ll kill off Funky — after all, I can think of only one cartoonist who ever ended his “humor” strip by killing off the title character — but whatever happens next, it happens without me: It’s off my reading list and will no longer be discussed on this site. As far as I’m concerned, the Funky Winkerbean strip ended in 1992.
For anybody who hasn’t seen it, I direct you to David Willis’s classic 2007 panel.

I haven’t seen Watchmen yet, but I have noticed that there doesn’t seem to be a single review of the film that fails to mention Dr. Manhattan’s penis. This seems to be a major obsession. I’ve heard rumors that the studio is negotiating to give Dr. Manhattan’s penis its own spin-off.
The son of one of my wife’s friends asked “If this is supposed to be the most powerful man in the universe, why can’t he find himself a pair of pants?” The kid’s missing the point: If the most powerful man in the universe wants to run around with everything hanging out, who’s going to tell him he can’t? “Hey, buddy, you got a problem with it? Talk to the penis.”
