… goes to the folks behind the BP Visa card, who with much fanfare announced a new rewards plan in an impossible-to-understand manner. I mean seriously, I don’t think I’ve ever encountered a tax form that was more difficult to interpret than this letter from BP Visa.

When I finally figured out what they were talking about, I worked out the numbers for my average credit card usage and determined that under the old plan, I got a monthly rebate of about $25, while under the new plan, under $15. So I phoned the customer service department and asked the woman there to explain the new plan to me, just in case I got it wrong. She began to read the notice to me.

Yeah, I said, I got that. I’ve been reading fluently for more than half a century. I just need you to confirm for me that under your new improved plan, once it’s all deciphered, I’ll get back about half of what I did before.

Well yes, she said, in your particular case.

Is there any particular case, any level of usage either more or less than mine, in which the customer doesn’t end up getting back a lot less than before?

Well, no…
