Adding to my confusion, MrKenneth subsequently sent this to me for the Arlo Page. while I’m very familiar with the two movies mentioned, I have no idea how this applies unless the point of the comic is that Mr. Juliette is attempting to diffuse the situation by sending his wife and step-daughter into orgasmic daydreams.

Okay, so in yesterday’s 9 Chickweed Lane, McEldowney appeared to call readers who criticized him imbeciles. Today in his blog, he says he wasn’t really calling anybody an imbecile, that was only a joke. And we should have known this, rather than taking the joke at face value (there was a joke there?), because we should have known he wouldn’t indulge in gratuitous name-calling and anybody who didn’t realize this is an idiot.

Well, he’s right about one thing: I’m not smart enough to follow his reasoning without getting a headache.

I mean, at least when Tom Batiuk called his readers ignorant poopyheads

he went through the pretense of incorporating it into a storyline and writing a “punchline.” And, you know, most readers knew what the hell he was referring to. This is just… bizarre. And not in a good way.

Update: I’ve had to delete a number of posts disrepectful of Mr. McEldowney’s work, critical of his gay and sexual themes, and complaining that he over-uses Thorax. Okay, I agree about Thorax, but that’s not the point here. I like 9 Chickweed Lane, and I appreciate the man’s talents. My only issue here is that I’ve never seen a cartoonist call his readers imbeciles before, even in the face of much more overt criticism (granted Johnny Hart was convinced his critics were going to Hell; but then, he apparently believed everybody but himself was going to Hell), and I’m curious to know what set him off and what was going through his mind when he thought this was a good idea.

9 Arlo Lane and Other Matters

It’s been a busy couple of weeks, and I’ve been lax about updates other than the regular daily CIDUs. At least half a dozen people told me that the current week’s hypersexualized 9 Chickweed Lane strips should probably retire the Arlo Award.

Of course, at least a couple of people had told me the same thing about the previous week’s strips.

I’d like to see this arc end with Edda and Amos realizing they’re incapable of becoming sexually aroused unless they’re on public display.

The high point of my visit to the New York ComicCon was getting to chat with Francisco Marciuliano (Medium Large) and Sara Benincasa (The Reader trailer). At the time chatting with Ces and Sara was probably a distant second for my wife to seeing Joss Whedon in person — but she might feel differently after the severe disappointment of the Dollhouse premiere.

You know a show is in serious trouble when its creator says publicly that it doesn’t get good until the sixth episode. Now, I’m no network executive, but in a situation like this I’d just pull episodes 2 through 5 and air 6 this week. Sure it might be a bit confusing, but the alternative is the probable cancellation of the program before week 6.

The current 9 Chickweed Lane storyline is ablout as blatant as you’re going to see in a newspaper comic: Edda has discovered that the only way to cure Amos’s hiccups is to have sex with him.

(Of course, it’s also possible that Amos is simply a lot smarter than he looks)

Carl Donath: I suggest that the November 7th “9 Chickweed Lane” should retire the Arlo Award entirely:

…tactfully & abstractly depicting, in step-by-step detail, the two protagonists’ first copulation. Those hands are showing exactly what they are doing/experiencing. CTD: Those aren’t just sketches of writhing hands, each image shows EXACTLY what they were doing/experiencing. It wasn’t just Arlo material, it retired the Arlo Award outright.
