Even if this made any sense — after all, if you’re paying for two admissions, it hardly matters which of you is getting the discount, does it? — Gracie gets a discount for being under the age of 12 anyway, no?

By the way, Coco is really good.

This is a ‘Tia Carmen is kind of batty’ strip, methinks.

“if you’re paying for two admissions, it hardly matters which of you is getting the discount, does it?”

If the two admissions are equal, then it does not, except to the accounting person in a back office somewhere who decides who gets how much of the admission prices (and movie theaters have VERY complicated accounting for this).

However, as you go on to note, they AREN’T paying equal admission rates. One of them is a “full” admission, while the other has a discount already applied. So, yes, it DOES matter which one gets a discount applied to it.

Let’s magnify things a bit. If the regular ticket is $1,000,000, and the child’s ticket is $1, does it make a difference which one the “senior discount” is applied to?

James, the discounted ticket price is the standard ticket price minus the discount. However you phrase it, it’s the same thing.

“James, the discounted ticket price is the standard ticket price minus the discount.”

First, you’re leaving out an S.
The discounted ticket price is the standard ticket price minus the discounts.

Second, as was the point of the first comment I made, not all tickets start out at the same price. 50% off a $10 ticket is worth less than 10% off a $100 ticket.
The local theater chain offers a wide variety of pricing. Certain movies command a premium. They have child tickets, “adult” tickets, and “senior” tickets, all at different price points. They have “choose your seat” tickets, price slightly higher than “regular” tickets. They have “promotional” tickets, which are sold to local businesses in books of ten which can be used as employee rewards (which is how I got one). There’s a “rewards program”… you get a discount on all the tickets you buy, and accumulate points towards getting free tickets.
The price to see a movie can vary depending on which subtheater it is played in within the multiplex, the time of day, what day it is (both day-of-the-week AND in relation to when the movie was released.)
ALL of this is covered in the contractual relationship between the movie theaters and the studios, who have a VERY complicated plan for allocating the money between the theater that owns the seat and the studio that owns the movie.

“However you phrase it, it’s the same thing.”
Let’s go back to the closing of my previous comment: “Let’s magnify things a bit. If the regular ticket is $1,000,000, and the child’s ticket is $1, does it make a difference which one the “senior discount” is applied to?”
Do the math. Do you get the same result if you apply a 50% discount to one ticket, and not the other and if you apply a 50% discount to the other ticket, and leave the first full-price? (Granted, if the difference between the original prices is small, the difference between applying discounts to those prices is also going to be small. It is NOT zero, unless the difference between prices is zero.)

Even if it’s a percentage discount, that just makes trying to apply it to the already discounted ticket even daffier, since the second discount is going to be less than it is on the more expensive ticket.

Say, for simplicity’s sake, the senior and kid ticket prices are both 50% off.

Say, again, for the sake of simplifying the math, that the ‘base’ (adult) price is $10.

Apply both discounts to separate tickets, and the total price of two is $10. $5, each.

Apply them both to the same ticket, and the total price is $12.50 - $10 for Carmen, and $2.50 for Gracie ($10/2 == $5. $5/2 == $2.50.)

The principle remains the same, though the exact amount of daffiness will change if they’re each discounted by a different amount.

If the discount is ‘$5 off’, then it doesn’t matter which ticket(s) they’re applied to, the total is going to be $10, either way - either both tickets are $5, or Carmen’s is $10, and Gracie’s is free. (If they’re discounted to different amounts, it could again prove more expensive, since if the senior discount would drive Gracie’s ticket below $0, there’s less than no chance they’d get refunded the difference.)

I still remember with a shudder the time a box office cashier asked me “Adult?” and I didn’t grasp what she was asking. Which it turned out was whether I wanted the Senior discount. “Adult” was their “regular” category, maybe in contrast to “Child”. So I thought she was saying something about the MPAA rating, and I kept saying things like “I certainly don’t mind” which just frustrated her more.

Senior discounts at movie theaters are usually a set price rather than a percentage off.

First, let me state that I am a senior, and am quite willing to take any senior discount offered. I look upon it like paying taxes — even if I philosophically agreed with a particular aspect of the tax code, if it helped me I’m not going to pay more taxes than necessary.

But I see the whole array of age related discounts as a reflection of a different time and a different set of assumptions. Young kids get a discount. Students get a discount. Seniors get a discount. Only people in the middle pay full freight. Yet it’s these people who are at least as likely to be squeezed for time and money between kids, elder care, old student loans, and wage stagnation.

Here is the overall poverty rate by age:
21% of people under age 18
14% of people 18 to 64 years of age
10% of people 65 years of age and over

Yes, there are seniors who are poor. Millions of them. But there are poor in the younger cohorts as well.

APOLIGIES FOR THE RANT: Yes, it’s a comics site. Sorry.

I was way too young the first time I got a senior citizen discount: I was seeing Hollywoodland, and the audience was sharply divided between young Ben Affleck fans and people old enough to remember George Reeves. Since the 12-year-old girl selling tickets could see I wasn’t the former, she assumed I was the latter.

I think the joke is Tia Carmen doesn’t mind paying full price (she has the money) and DOES mind being thought of as old (she has the vanity)…but she is willing to take the discount if it makes Gracie happy and it can be transferred.

So yeah….mostly the joke is Tia Carmen doesn’t want to admit she is old?

Robert started getting senior discounts in his early 50s as by then his hair had gone more salt than pepper (not that he would ask, they would assume.) As Powers said, at the movies it is usually a set price rather than a %. The theater we go to was $7.50 senior, but since they were taken over, senior price is $7. Yes, husband is a big spender - dinner at Ikea $20 or less (and since they now give a free entree for every 6 adult entrees one buys - it can be under $10 for the two of us if I don’t like the soup that night) and $14 for the movies for the two of us for Saturday night date night.
