Frazz is saying that, even though it was a bad year, we won’t
have one like it for another 2017 years (because it’s a prime
number). She’s saying that doesn’t make sense. He replies that
it doesn’t matter; he wants to believe it, so he’ll go with
whatever theory allows him to believe it.

The only way it makes sense to me is if you assume that how a year goes is defined by its prime factors.
So 2017 is a prime number so its factors are itself, 2017 and 1.

The next time a year will have 2017 as a prime factor is in 2017 more years. 4034 with factors 2017, 2, 1.

What Arthur and Folly both said. Folly is explaining why it’s an especially dumb thing to hold to; Frazz is desperate to come up with SOME reason why 2018 won’t be like 2017.

For what it’s worth, 4034 will have a prime number and 2; if you divide 2018 by 2, you get 1009, which is also a prime.

This is as meaningless a fact as Frazz’s, but I nonetheless find it as worrisome as Frazz finds his idea comforting.

Yeah, but then he’s willing to cling to whatever floats, and we all know that sh!t floats…

It really doesn’t make sense in that the next prime year is 2027. Pretty obvious that that’s the next real candidate too… 2019 is clearly divisible by 3 (sums to 12), 2021 is obvious if you can recognize squares (important for mental prime finding, as is knowing difference of squares), 2023 is clearly divisible by 7 (202 - 3(2) = 196, 19 - 6(2) = 7). So we really only get 10 years if there’s a prime curse.

Numerology of curse numbers typically doesn’t involve just multiples either… repetition, inclusion, reordering, reduction to the same value (10 or 1 for 2017), also tend to count. Meaning that you can often tie future bad luck to the same number in some way, because patterns are always available. It’s like that World Weekly News article decades back that claimed that Nostradamus predicted that Jacques Chirac would be the anti-Christ, because his predictions apparently used anagrams where the vowels were ignored and consonants were sometimes substituted.

    It’s not a prime curse. It’s cycles. Since 2017 is a prime,
there’s no cycle shorter than 2017 years which will bring such a
    bad year.

Suppose they had thus conversation a year earlier. And were agreed that 2016 was a bad year. Arithmetically when would they be expecting a recurrence? I wonder how the theory of divisors and life quality works out.

re “I am baffled how 2023 is “clearly” divisible by 7.”

2100 is clearly divisible by 7; 2023 is 77 less than 2100, and 77 is clearly divisible by 7.

“I am baffled how 2023 is “clearly” divisible by 7.”

    It’s clearly divisible by 7 because … it is. 2023 = 289*7.

How clearly one can figure that out in ones head is entirely up to ones own. I’d personally “toss out” multiples of seven. 2023 = 2002 + 21; 2002 = 2*1001; 1001 = 980 + 21; 98=2*49; 49= 7*7. But I wouldn’t expect anyone else to do it the same way.

    2023 = 2100-77 = 7(300 - 11) and 2023 = 20*100 + 23 = 40*50 + 23 = 40*49 + 40+23 = 40*49+63 = 7(40*7+9) will work just as well, even better.

And thent there is simply: “seven goes into 20 two times with 6 left over; seven goes into 62 eight times with 6 left over; and seven goes into 63 exactly nine times.”

I’d take “clearly” with a grain of salt.

I’d take it to mean “with an acceptable amount of basic arithmetic”. Which can be translated as mildly fun mental gymnastics to please gauge my eyes out with a rusty grapefruit spoon depending one’s personally aesthetics.

“7 divides 2023 evenly” is verifiable by simple arithmetic. Let’s leave it at that.

Kind of chicken-poo for the cartoonist not to mention the Baboon bathing in the Sirachi Sauce for why 2017 was a “bad year”. Without it, saying 2017 was bad was just a matter of opinion.

It kind of reminds me of 2012. That was the absolute worst year of my life and yet somehow a lot people seemed to take it for granted that it would be universally recognized by all as “a really good year”. It kind of amused me how people seem to take it for granted that everyone will have the same opinion of a year.

All things considered, if it weren’t for the Baboon bathing in the Sirachi Sauce wasn’t too bad for me personally. Whether was nice and I played a lot of fun trivia and things went … smoothly. But that is ONE freakin’ big babboon in the sirachi sauce. Can’t ignore that!

It … doesn’t. And this is the type of thing that is so ephemeral that if you gave *any* thought to it at all, it would collapse. And noting 2017 is prime is … thought.

The idea is that if something happens in year X then on average it happens once every X years and therefore it will happen again in X years (… what?…. are you *thinking*? I told you not to do that…) For short cycles they’ll be simple things: elections come every four years, major career changes every 7 what have you. For long cycles they are complex and bad things. 2017 is prime. It’s unique and everything was horrible but it’ll be 2017 years before we have any of it again. And next time we will also have whatever comes in even years (something good presumably— a general exhale, I guess.)

What bugs me is that 2 times a prime number is *not* a number repeating itself. 6 isn’t 3 “all over again” and 93 isn’t 31 repeating itself.

If we’re collecting these, my mental check on 7 dividing 2023 was like this: Add 7, you get 2030. Divide by 10 (irrelevant factor) to get 203. Add 7, you get 210. Which now is “obviously” divisible by 7.
