Arlo is attempting to put a modern spin on FDR’s Four Freedoms. The addition isn’t so universal.

PeterW has the beginning of the joke. But I’m assuming there was specific context.

It’s from 1996. Arlo is wearing a tie (a white collar worker back then?) and he’s laughing at the idea of beach volleyball as ranking with the Four Freedoms. The defensive guy is being mocked for saying or doing something that Arlo is probably exaggerating for a laugh.

I figured glasses guy had said something about freedom to play
beach volleyball and Arlo put it in context. It explains Arlo’s
laughter and the other guy’s grumpiness and response.

If I had to guess, I’d insert some details that aren’t there and suggest they’re playing pub trivia, and Arlo’s buddy here flubbed a question.

If you crack yourself up, you lose the game.

My guess is that they were going around the table saying things that they were thankful for, and the guy said that he was thankful for beach volleyball. And Arlo reacts as shown.

Freedom to complain all you want about Grumbles clerks on your own website that you so graciously allow others to participate on.

Gene looks suspiciously like Arlo’s co-worker.
