For a nice crossover like this, it really should get a “Zits” tag to go along with the “Shoe”.

that does bring up the question. what is the etiquette or rules about interacting with other newspaper strips?stay in your own syndicate? be friends with the artist of the other strip? Just do whatever and hope the other guy (or gal) doesnt get mad?

“what is the etiquette or rules about interacting with other newspaper strips?”
Well, the law on the subject is pretty simple, it’s “fair use”, which is not copyright infringement.

Sometimes the strips ARE actually linked… Lois from “Hi and Lois” and Beetle from “Beetle Bailey” are siblings. When strips change creators, some of those linkages can be lost.

There are certainly exceptions, but most of the special event “mashups” that I have seen have been done within syndicate lines. This has the advantage that both ends of a “trade” have a better chance of appearing within the same paper, since newspapers generally fill their comic pages from a single syndicate.

I’m sure that within a syndicate, the creators are told in direct terms not to do anything that would hurt sales for ANY of the syndicate’s properties, and editors would reject anything that might. Between syndicates, I’m not so sure.

I was surprised that Stephan Pastis (of Pearls Before Swine) is
friends with Jeff Keane of Family Circus.

Zits always has jokes about Jeremy’s enormous shoes, so I’m sure the two artists can come to some sort of arrangement.
