It’s the new thing: vaped salmon instead of smoked salmon.

Are those flavors really used in (tobacco) vaping? Or is the cartoonist just thinking about the days of candy cigarettes?

There are a lot of weird vape flavors, which makes a lot if people think the pens are being marketed to kids.

Are those flavors really used in (tobacco) vaping?

A quick web search suggests that those are real vaping flavors.

I saw someone using an e-cigarette (vaporiser) on a street corner just yesterday (I was stopped at a red light in downtown Berlin). It was hideous. The cloud of smoke he exhaled was enormous, much worse that anything I’ve ever seen from a normal smoker.

Kilby, if that was really vaping it wasn’t a cloud of smoke at all. Vaping devices don’t have a fire in them. It was steam.

These days, you can get your coffee, smokes (tobacco or vaping), vodka, and ice cream all in the same flavors

  8. Kilby Jun 15th 2017 at 10:40 am 8

@ Carl (6) - I’d believe the steam theory if it was coming out of the device, but the cloud he emitted came out of his mouth (meaning lungs), so it cannot have been that hot. Even if “finely atomized water droplets” is correct, I’m sure they still contained a lot of whatever the gunk was in the device. I was simply glad that I was in a car with closed windows, and did not have to find out how bad the stench was.

@ Kilby (8) - if you’d had your windows down, you would have discovered that it doesn’t have a “stench” like tobacco smoke. It really just smells like the flavor on the bottle. Mango, or chocolate, or whatever.

As the son of smokers, I loathe the smell of cigarettes and cigars, but being around people who vape doesn’t bother me at all. (Well, apart from the fact that it seems to be the only thing some of them have been able to talk about since they took it up.)

It’s not water steam, it’s a vapor that has a boiling point low enough to be safely inhaled. Depending on the vape and the person’s lung capacity, rather impressive clouds of vapor can be exhaled.

It looks like smoke because it is in the process of condensing, like fog.

Dave has it - it’s vapor. True steam (i.e., gaseous phase of water) is invisible; what we see is gaseous-liquid mixture of steam condensing to water.

I’ll gladly concede the point that tobacco fumes are much stinkier than the odor from vaping. But I still find the clouds of vapor to be offensive. It’s kind of like being around somebody carrying an aerosol can of air freshener they are repeatedly spraying. I don’t think the smell is pleasant at all. And I find it annoying to be the unwilling subject of someone else’s fragrant habit. I’m thankful that smokers are trying to give up the unhealthy and disgusting practice; it remains to be seen if vaping is really much of an improvement.

DanV — I’ve never been around someone who is vaping, but it sounds like it would be something like standing next to a person who is wearing far too much perfume, an experience to be avoided whenever possible. Is that about right?

Vapes make me think of the Benzite from the ST:TNG episode “Memory Alpha.”

I can’t stand vape clouds. They are basically room temperature clouds of disgusting lung fog with an obnoxious taxicab-air-freshener flavor added. I would rather be sitting next to a stinky cigar (almost) even than a vaper

Just the other day I came across my first empty vape cartridge litter. It was watermelon flavor. At first I thought it was lip balm, but noticed the harmful chemical warnings on it and realized what it was.

John Small Berries - I grew up in a family that quit cigarettes when the early reports of the dangers came out (although we did catch mom with one at wedding or bar mitzvah - the caterers used to put them out on the table - some decades later, 3 daughters yelling at her made her put it out quickly.

But dad and his brothers (and a couple of my male cousins) were cigar smokers. Dad also smoked a pipe. Not every day for either - but on and off. I love the smell of cigars and pipes as a result, while hating the smell of cigarettes.

We go to the Goshenhoppen Festival in August (small, almost local, Pennsylvania German - not Amish) and they demonstrate their ancestors’ life in the 18th and 19th century. In the 19th century “trades” section they roll cigars - which are available by donation to the organization. Every time I see this I look at Robert, sigh and say “if my dad was still alive I would buy one for him”.

I haven’t actually been around anyone who was vaping, but this salmon sounds disgusting.

I don’t like the smell of cigarettes, but I can tolerate it mostly because my mom’s a smoker and I grew up with it. I can’t STAND cigar smell, though. My husband, on the other hand, can’t stand the smell of cigarette smoke but doesn’t mind the smell of cigars - because his dad used to smoke them periodically.

My dad quit smoking before I was old enough to ever remember having seen him do it, but my mom continued to smoke until I was a teenager, leaving all of us kids with a life-long distaste for anything related to cigarettes. I especially despise the idiots who discard their butts on the ground.

One time we came up with the bright idea of creating an “exploding” cigarette (like the exploding cigars seen occasionally in Looney Toons cartoons). We collected the powder from a paper spool of caps for a cap gun. Luckily we got cold feet and decided to test the effect before leaving the booby trap in her cigarette package: the flash was at least two feet long.

We were extremely happy when my mom finally decided to quit. It was exceedingly difficult for several months, but she succeeded on her first try (cold turkey).
