So we should refer to them as “The Mysterious Giant Pup Tents of Egypt”?

“No, we just haven’t dug up the rest of the monuments …”

I don’t have a link, but decades ago there was a MAD cartoon that featured the pyramids, with the archaeologists having dug a bunch of holes around the pyramids, but finding nothing… but the pyramids were just the tops of huge, Washington-monument towers over a city that was just barely deeper than the holes they were digging.

If he’s referring to a pyramid, I have to say that his knowledge of anatomy leaves something to be desired.

    Think “pitching a tent”.

James Pollock, that HAS to be a Don Martin.

(one search later) Here we are. Found it on a comics auction site. It was sold a few years ago for $1,673.

That’s… not actually the one I was thinking of.
I’m pretty sure the one I was thinking of was by Sergio Aragones. (Love his work.)

The key factors… the archaeologists have dug holes all around the pyramid, but not deep enough because the pyramid is a very tall tower (much taller than in this cartoon.)

The gag is, if they’d just dug a little farther, they’d have hit something.

James, Sergio did a fair amount of swiping and repeating. He had a LOT of margins to fill every month…

It’s not a repeat, either stylistically or the gag, and may well have come before Martin’s, but sure.

Is it an Arlo if they just come right out and say “boner”?

    Re #10 (Mike)
It’s still an Arlo, it just won’t win an Arlo Award.

I think James’ gag [3 and 7] was funnier than the Martin one [6], and WAY funnier than the one shown above.
