You probably don’t want to know my original title for this

You’d think Janis would be able to tell Arlo’s moans of distress from moans of BOMPCHICKAWOW!

Freezer: I saw an episode of “2 Broke Girls” on TV. A boyfriend said/made the noise
BROWNCHICKENBROWNCOW! It may not be original, but I had never heard it put that way before and thought it was funny.

I vote for the original title…

  4. Mona May 5th 2014 at 09:39 pm 4

    I second Jerry’s motion.

  5. The Bad Seed May 5th 2014 at 10:10 pm 5

So what was the original title?

  6. Stan May 6th 2014 at 12:29 am 6

Oh, get you minds out of the gutter, everyone! It’s obvious he’s had one of those dreams where you turn up at work or are sitting in class with no clothes on and nearly die of embarrassment. Gosh, the puerile tone of this page is certainly off-putting! You can’t seem to go anywhere on the internet these days without allusions to sex, sex, sex. Sheesh!

Call me clueless, but Mona’s @2 is a CIDU (citation I don’t understand).

Stan (#6) — then why’s he smiling in the second panel?

(I couldn’t tell if you were joking or not, so I decided to answer anyway…)

  9. Lost in A**2 May 6th 2014 at 06:50 am 9

Which citation, Kilby? The television show title, or the sound effect? The sound effect is just using real words instead of onomatopoeias for the “standard” burlesque drum riff used when the performer is walking.

Stan (#6)- Arlo’s smile in panel 2 and his statement “One of those were _you_ don’t wear any clothes” make it clear this isn’t a nightmare!

  11. Jerry May 6th 2014 at 07:12 am 11

I always thought the bow chicka wow wow referred to the more contemporary, and repetitive 70’s porn soundtracks. It’s not the drums. It’s the electric guitar and bass.

Agree - no question that Arlo’s dream isn’t really a nightmare.

  12. Terry May 6th 2014 at 07:44 am 12

Bill - probably do. Please tell.

Blinky’s got it. But to throw in two more cents, the “you” does not refer to Janis, but to himself, and himself likely in a classroom littered with white blouses and short plaid skirts.

  13. Powers May 6th 2014 at 08:03 am 13

I don’t think I’ve ever heard the actual “bow chicka wow wow” riff, just people saying “bow chicka wow wow”.

  14. Kilby May 6th 2014 at 08:26 am 14

Thanks to Lost (@9) for identifying the “drum riff” effect, and to Binky (@10) for pointing out the indeterminate character of the pronoun “you”. It’s written to appear as an innocuous self-referential “one”, but I favor Binky’s reading, meaning that Janis is the one who is naked, and Arlo is agreeing with “nightmare” just to stay out of trouble.

Married men know full well that you CAN get in trouble for something that only happened in a dream.

I agree with the Jerry’s assertion that “bow chicka wow wow” is an onomatopoetic allusion to 70’s guitar/bass and not a drum riff. Also “brown chicken brown cow” is indeed a tired “joke version” of that phrase that stopped being funny 20 years ago. IIRC, the first time I saw it might have been a Mother Goose and Grimm strip. It has subsequently made its way to greeting cards and a horrific country music song.

  17. Mona May 6th 2014 at 11:54 am 17

I kinda figured that brownchickenbrowncow was not new, but it was new to me.

  18. Stan May 6th 2014 at 11:55 pm 18

Wait. Just wait. Are you telling me that there ARE allusions to sex everywhere on the internet, including the Arlo and Janis comic strip? That’s not the internet I’ve experienced. Then again, I only come here and www.marthastewart.com (admittedly, her recipe for mushroom barley salad that one time was a bit racy). I should get out more.

The Internet: The most efficient method of connecting people to pictures of naked people ever invented.

  20. Meryl A May 7th 2014 at 02:06 am 20

I had the impression that it was not a nightmare, but he was willing to go along with that idea as it was a dream in which Janis was in the buff and she would have been upset at his dreaming of same.

Stan: Yes, you should get out more. And stop ruining my perfectly wonderful dreams of sexual escapades. By the way, do you know how to make Martha Stewart scream twice? Unfortunately, I can’t tell you, because that would violate the family-friendly values of this forum. You might want to google this question for the uncensored answer.

After reading these comments, I need a cold shower. ;-)
