And also, you know, that “geezer” thing…

    Ah ha!

Adam meant that his Great-Aunt owned some of Bobby Jones’ clothes because she was such a huge fan….older golfer meant that Adam was wearing HER clothes and that if he could fit in them, she must have been large, as he is…..fat?

    I think?

The aunt was physically large to fit in the clothing, which I presume is in the style worn by 1920s amateur golfer Bobby Jones. I don’t think there’s any reason to suppose that the clothes were ever Jones’s own.

It’s an “Adam is fatter than he’s drawn” joke.

Re Geezer alert: They made a movie about Bobby Jones in 2004, and that movie is the only reason I’ve heard of the man.

I can’t tell from the comments above whether or not anyone suggested this explanation, so here it is:

The punch line in panel 4 is based on the double definition of “big” in panel 3.

Panel 3: Assumes that “big” described her dedication and enthusiasm:
“She was a big Bobby Jones fan.” = “She was an *avid* Bobby Jones fan.”

Panel 4: Assumes that “big” described her size:
“She was a big Bobby Jones fan.” = “She was a *fat* Bobby Jones fan.”

Since the strip brings us back to vintage golfing, I assume it’s bringing us to a time when “lady golfers” dressed like men (more so than male golfers, who dressed like clowns) and were assumed to be lesbian.

Point of order, DPWally. Mildred Didrikson was the outstanding female golfer of that era, and they called her “Babe”.

Point of order, James: George Herman Ruth was a man and they called him “Babe.”

So NEITHER ONE of them was assumed to be a lesbian.

Bobby Jones should not be a geezer reference; there’s a line of sportswear still being manufactured under his name. Maybe Adam is wearing items from that line.

I hadn’t heard of Mildred Didrikson, that’s beyond my geezer zone, but she fits the profile perfectly. She wasn’t called “Babe” because of her femininity, and was often criticized for being insufficiently feminine. There wasn’t much respect for female athletes at that time.

I presume that Mr. Zaharias thought her feminine enough to marry?
