They cut a slice out of the plank to make it look like a shark bit it, and thus there’s sharks in the water, to make the dude sweat a bit more. (Not like being tossed overboard is exactly a good thing to begin with.)

Its a bad choice for a single panel joke - if the guys who cut the ‘bite’ out of it aren’t shown, then it just looks like there IS a shark. But since they are, it doesn’t make sense that the guy would be sweating, as he can see them laughing with the bit cut out. 2 panels, with the second showing them belowdecks - or somewhere not directly behind the guy - and laughing about it, would be way better.

I think the saw and ‘cut-out’ were hidden somewhere, and the second sailor is only showing it to the first sailor now that the victim is out on the board.

Otherwise, the first sailor would already be in on the joke and wouldn’t need the second sailor to show him the board and saw.

Bit of a moot prank, though, as getting eaten by sharks might actually be a more merciful demise than floating adrift with hands tied until eventual drowning, starvation, hypothermia, etc.

It’s only moot if they actually push him off the plank.

It looks too smooth for a shark bite. It seems to me that if the
guy takes one more step, he’ll plunge for a few feet and get hung up
in the cutout, which is not as wide as he is.

@ James #4, Isn’t that how walking the plank was supposed to work?

  7. Morris Keesan Feb 6th 2013 at 08:09 am 7

Since they cut a piece out of it, he can’t walk all the way to the end. So when he tries to walk the plank, he’ll fall into the water early. Har har. I think the point is that they’re all stupid, and think that landing in the water slightly sooner is somehow much worse than walking all the way to the end of the plank.

But if the intent was to make him hit the water sooner, why go to the trouble of cutting out a semicircular area (which must have been extremely difficult with the saw they have) instead of just cutting straight across to shorten the plank?

In the film “Support Your Local Sheriff,” James Garner gets a prisoner (played by Bruce Dern) to stay in an unfinished jail cell with no door by pointing to some dribbled red paint just over the threshold and saying that that was from the last guy who didn’t stay in the cell. Head games; gotta love ‘em.

Whole LOT of overthinking going on here….

The prank is that they’re making it look like a shark bit off the end of the plank. “Ha! He’ll think a shark is about to jump up and eat him! Great prank!” The joke is that they’re trying to scare a guy who’s about to die (and possibly be eaten by sharks) anyway!

I think this is one of those “so obvious we missed it” jokes.

    Primal pirate pulls plank prank.

“@ James #4, Isn’t that how walking the plank was supposed to work?”

Sure… unless you’re just making someone think they’re going to be killed, because it’s a prank. These particular pirates don’t appear to be in full-on murderous mode.

Daniel J. Drazen - “Support Your Local Sheriff” is one of my favorite movies. I saw it in the theatre as a kid and loved it. Still holds up today. Besides James Garner and Bruce Dern there is a a panoply of wonderful character actors: Jack Elam, Walter Brennen, Harry Morgan, Kathleen Freeman, Henry Jones, and the delightful Joan Hackett. I’d recommend this to anyone who loves comedy.

    @James Pollock: You’re saying it’s a plank prank?
    A rank plank prank?
A rank plank prank that drew a blank?
A rank plank prank that drew a blank and stank?

I think the real crime here is that they’re making him wear control-top pantyhose.
