Has anybody ever referred to a single person adopting a child as “having a child out of wedlock”?

(and of course this rerun strip carries some unintentional foreshadowing, since years later Lila will adopt Annie)

    Well, there’s “having a child” and having a child….

It’s still pretty nontraditional to encourage a single mother to adopt. She’s probably just using the phrase to highlight how odd it is.

“Grandma” hasn’t thought it all the way through. When “mom” walks around with “child” amongst people who know she isn’t/hasn’t been married, what are they going to assume?

I think she’s using that phrase to be sarcastic.

Paula Poundstone is my favorite single mother raising several adopted children.

I think she’s using the phrase as a way of deterring this line of attack from her mother. If she’s as old-fashioned as Lila implies, then the phrase “A child out of wedlock” ought to at least give her pause.

The idea of Lila being approved to adopt a child is unnerving.
