    Guy needs surgery?

Actually, it may just be that the “help” (money) should be applied within his cap.

I just cannot get the thought of a body cavity search out of my mind after reading the sign. Ewww…

Okay okay, maybe that comes to mind. But I think the intended joke is along the lines of “Step into my office” when the walls and door are imaginary.

Instead of making his own “please help me”/”homeless veteran with two children and a cat”/etc. sign, he stole a sign from a store window.

i don’ see the unpleasant explanation. a couple of others come to mind.

he was fired, and the sign is for his replacement. he hangs out there because it’s a familiar place and he has no where to go.

    or better,

he can’t afford to make a sign, and put his hat in front of the first one he saw that didn’t have someone aleady sitting next to it.

The sign is for the business within the building. The irony may be that this unemployed, down-on-his-luck man is sitting next to the answer to his problems without realizing it (or without wanting to take advantage of it). It looks like this irony is not lost on the man walking past the scene.

A true entrepreneur, he’s looking to expand. A job creator!

He needs help. Deep down inside he is injured and hemorrhaging life, and he needs help.

Badly placed sign. Or homeless guy.

I think mitch4 has the “correct” assessment, per the cartoonist’s intentions. However, I think the cartoonist failed to consider all the possible ewwy interpretations.

I think the point is simply a beggar looking for an assistant to help him beg. The joke being that begging is so simple it doesn’t require an assistant.

About as funny as cow tools.

Okay, This guy sits down to beg implying that he cannot find a job, but the location he picks is unfortunate as there is a sign there for the business against whose wall he is leaning that the business is looking for an employee. The sign is not his.

There is another possibility that would make Meryl A partially right. Not sure if this strip ever makes political commentaries, but let’s say the sign is not his but refers to the business in the building. The guy walking by is a bit disturbed that jobs are there to be had, but the beggar chooses to ask others for money while doing nothing.

Mark M, that is along the lines of what I meant.
