A nice take-off on the unending hype about the polls. I even saw a “poll” that was simply an average of all the other polls.

Wow. That makes no statistical sense whatsoever. Let’s say I have a poll of 1000 people which gives Romney 52% Well, I conduct my own poll of one person which gives Obama 100% and Romney 0%. OK, let’s average 52 and 0 together and… oh no! Romney’s chances have fallen to only 26%! That one guy’s opinion sure made all the difference, eh?

The way I understand it, the “super poll” uses a formula that weighs other major polls according to their historical accuracy and of course adjusts for sampling size. It seems to be fairly accurate and well regarded.

Similar in principle, I suppose, to the way the Dow Jones Industrial Average is calculated.

I was more impressed with today’s xkcd for the day after the election.
