Somebody (OK, apparently a LOT of somebodies) have never heard of a “trap” play in basketball.
They way it works is, while the other team is in their end of the court with the ball, one or two guys drop off the players they’re guarding to surround the player with the ball, forcing that player to stop and pass, past two or three defenders right there. It’s risky leaving players unguarded, but it disrupts what the offensive players wanted to do and slows the pace of the game. Or, I guess, you could use a snare from the sideline, which will ALSO disrupt what the offensive players want to do and slow the pace of the game.

What I don’t get is where are they playing? It looks like the crest of a road - the player’s coming up to a rise.

Thanks James, apparently I’m one of your “a LOT of somebodies”.

The “trap play” explanation makes sense - except that the two setting the trap don’t appear to be on the opposing team; they’re dressed as spectators.

John, that just means that the guy with the ball is on the visiting team.

Perhaps that’s a wanna-be trophy wife, hoping to snag herself a basketball player?

Some people will do anything to help their team win.

Something like this happened once in Canadian football…a player was running with the ball towards the end zone, and a spectator stretches out and trips him. Next season, there was suddenly a lot more space between the field and the spectators.

That brings to mind John Cleese as the professor on the sidelines of the student rugby game in Monty Python’s “The Meaning of Life“.

P.S. Nuts. I blew the closing blockquote token.
