Is the joke here that the restrooms have cute names, or that he’s too stupid to figure it out? As bathroom signs go, I’m certainly not impressed: I’ve seen at least a dozen variations over the years, and I’m sure y’all have as well.

I remember when my son was 6, he went off to the bathroom at an Outback and came running back to the table in a panic: was he supposed to use “Blokes” or “Sheilas”?

CJA: 17-year-old sexual assault victim faces jail time for Tweeting her attackers’ names

Okay, this one morphed from one issue to another: the teenage boys who attacked her pleaded guilty to charges that will probably spare them of any jail time. The records were sealed, but their victim posted their names on Twitter. She was charged with contempt of court and could have been sent to jail for 180 days.

Whether she should have faced jail time was the original question. It still is, but it’s been replaced by perhaps a more important one: charges were dropped because the media took up her story, and the National Organization of Women made a lot of noise, and people discussed the case on talk shows. An online petition with more than 50,000 signatures might or might not have played a part. But should judicial decisions be made according to popular opinion? Should this girl be free from contempt of court charges (regardless of whether you think she should have faced them in the first place) while another person who violates a court order, who might not seem as sympathetic, who doesn’t attract the same media attention… and okay, who might not be as young and pretty and white… faces jail time?
