Considering the thing started early Sunday morning — I’m
not a morning person — I can’t complain. Nice weather, unlike two years ago, and I managed not to strain my back the day before like last year. Alas, I had to do the walk without my junior partner this year, who signed up instead for the Boston version of the walk.
CIDU raised $593 this year, a significant bump over last year’s $542. We’ve actually beaten the previous year’s total every single year since we started collecting here (2007 or 2008, who remembers?), so thank you all. You’re the best.
A couple donations came in too late — but the Boston walk isn’t until May 13, so I’ll give that money to my son to turn in. For that matter, if you’ve been meaning to donate but never got around to it, I guess there still is some time.
And finally, a shout-out to Pop Culture Shock Therapy’s Doug Bratton, who was a volunteer Sunday morning at the New York City walk, drawing sketches for kids.

Seriously, how did this get past the syndicate and newspaper editors?

First of all, I don’t get it. Second of all, you don’t want to know what I
thought was going on here before I realized that was supposed to be the squirrel’s own tail.

In honor of the fact that I’m letting my New Yorker print subscription expire after many, many years — it’s just easier to read it on my phone now; Eustace Tilley would just plotz, I know — I went through my backlog of New Yorker LOLs and realized I had no idea which of them I’d already used and which ones I hadn’t.
It’s even possible that one or two of these aren’t from the magazine at all, but rather from The Rejection Collection. Who can tell sometimes?
So I’m solving the problem by posting all of them at once. There will be some “reruns,” but most of them should be new to most of you.

The five stages. Got it. But what’s the joke? Why not any five items? The Little Piggy That Went to Market and his friends? The five Marx Brothers?

Is this comic anti-Semitic or at the very least offensive? I don’t think so, just as I had no problem with
that vodka ad. Of course I’d probably have no right to complain even if I were offended, since I didn’t say anything when Cyanide and Happiness made fun of Communists and trade unionists.
I think the fact that this is an online comic makes a big difference. A “Jews are cheap” gag would be a lot more problematic coming from Dagwood’s mouth. But the world of online comics is a “leave your sensitivities at the door” environment.
Your thoughts?

A couple of people asked me about this, and my first instinct was that “restricted text message” is something that exists only in Tom Batiuk’s reality. A quick peek at the rest of the week’s strips confirms this.

Does this comic (or other variations of the same gag) really make any sense to a generation that’s grown up without smoking/no smoking sections?
