What goes through parents’ minds when they name their kid Jim Crow? I heard this guy on the radio today, some economist, don’t know whether he’s black or white, and actually I’m wondering whether the name is more problematic if he’s black, or if he’s white.

My son’s on an out-of-town trip with friends this weekend. God forbid he should give us any first-hand information about where they are — but he and four of his friends have cell phone cameras and Facebook accounts, so by combining the various photos, I’ve been able to follow their progress online.

I guess this is the “new normal,” like “What time is it?”/”Hold on, I’ll check my phone.”

The future isn’t what it used to be

I had occasion yesterday to look through some science fiction stories I’d had published back in the early 1980s. They held up pretty well (I never wrote “trendy,” so there was no literary equivalent of 80s hair; though I can understand the temptation, if they were being reprinted today, to have Greedo shoot first) — but it’s an odd thing to write stories that take place 25-to-30 years in teh future and then read them 25-to-30 years later: some of my predictions were impressively accurate, while others were totally off-the-wall. No jetpacks, but still…

And of course the whole concept of reading them at a time I once thought of as “the future” is disconcerting.

I wrote one story about a character who was essentially my freshman-year college roommate (a decade earlier), whose irritating behavior was magnified by the fact that he seemed oblivious to teh fact that he was annoying people. Re-reading the story last night, I found it quite entertaining — but about halfway through, it occurred to me for the first time that my roommate probably suffered from some degree of Asperger’s. Thirty-eight years ago, who knew?
