The kid has been on some sort of medication to improve his performance in school. But, because the report card indicates failure, the father is left with no other option but to remedy his son’s deficiency with a Elizabethan collar intended for animals (yes, that’s what those are actually called).

I thought it was just a side-effect of the meds.

Maybe he keeps biting open his scabs. Lovely picture, eh?

But HOW would an Elizabethan collar improve his performance?

Keep him from licking bits he isn’t so he can concentrate on his studies?

The collar focuses the kid’s attention in one direction. (Which means the drawing should be of horse blinders, not a “don’t rip out your stitches” collar.)

Plus, of course, the collar means the end of the kid’s social life, and therefore those distractions won’t keep him from his schoolwork…

Now he can’t see a book open on a desk in front of him. Self-defeating device.

He had his kid neutered, in the hope it would calm him down.

Taps into the parental urge to try something, anything.

Is this much more illogical than Baby Einstein?

Now that I think about it, I think Dave (#7) has it right. It’s not the collar, but what was performed to necessitate the collar.

Maybe it’s to keep him from sticking his head up his behind.

Maybe it’s a tried and true family remedy, as I think the dad must have worn one as a kid. Notice his tiny head in relation to the rest of his body.

The boy was a notorious self-fellator. (I know, his body type doesn’t look ideal for that, but he managed.) The collar was meant to stop that, and keep his mind on his studies.

Quirky off-beat explanation: Mike Baldwin cannot @#$ing draw!

Seriously. It’s a bit distracting that the kid has a tiny baby’s amputated arm stump for a head, no?
