David Montgomery: I pretty much get the latest Xkcd (and its excellent lesson in password management), but what is the reference to March 1997? A quick online search provides some possibilities like Comet Hale-Bopp and the Heaven’s Gate cultists, but that is pretty obscure even for this strip. Surely black hat guy isn’t bitter about being passed over as Mother Teresa’s successor (which would be even more obscure).

What Joyce’s father says to her in the fourth panel is virtually

You have to wonder how many of the politicians who rallied against the “Ground Zero Mosque” for their own political ends are saying now “Okay, well, I didn’t mean for it to go
this far.”
For that matter, you have to wonder how many of those politicians are saying “Hell, yeah!”

Just for the record, I know I was sent some Ewww’s I could have used this morning, but I’m way behind in sorting through my e-mail. There are some CIDUs and synchronicities waiting around for my attention as well. I hope to get caught up over the next few days.

The U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives announced today that Saturday’s fire at an Islamic Center being built in Murfreesboro, Tennessee was, indeed, arson. Protestors had complained that it was disrespectful to allow the building only 886 miles from Ground Zero.
