Too Close

Cidu Bill on Sep 3rd 2010

The U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives announced today that Saturday’s fire at an Islamic Center being built in Murfreesboro, Tennessee was, indeed, arson. Protestors had complained that it was disrespectful to allow the building only 886 miles from Ground Zero.

Free to Be Me and Me (Lawsuit of the Week)

Cidu Bill on Sep 3rd 2010

A Texas shuttle bus driver, who was fired for refusing to drive a woman to a Planned Parenthood clinic, is suing his former employee for “reinstatement, back pay, and compensatory damages for pain, suffering and emotional distress,” claiming that his religious rights were violated.

Well, I agree with him. After all, doctors and pharmacists already have the explicit right to refuse to provide and fill birth control prescriptions if these go against their beliefs, even when the patient has no access to alternative doctors or pharmacies and even if, in the case of “morning after pills,” timing is vital — so why shouldn’t Edwin Graning have the same right to do his job only to the extent that his conscience allows?

City employees who who refuse to issue marriage licenses for same-sex couples in states where same-sex marriage is legal? Same deal. Nobody should be forced to violate his beliefs for the sake of his job. And as long as you’re refusing to issue those marriage licenses to gays, come on, interracial marriages?? Those are clearly wrong. It says so in the Bible somewhere.

Likewise the Bible says that divorce is a sin (sort of), so judges should have the right to categorically refuse to grant them.

Real estate agents shouldn’t be forced to show black families homes in white neighborhoods if they sincerely believe people are happier with their own kind.

Pharmacy employees shouldn’t be required to condone homosexual behavior by selling condoms to gay men. It’s a matter of principle, after all.

And what right do colleges have to insist that a professor accept women in his classroom if he sincerely believes that women should remain ignorant, barefoot and pregnant (see paragraph 2, and I suppose the rights of shoe store employees should be protected as well)?

Outrage I Don’t Understand

Cidu Bill on Sep 3rd 2010

Many Jewish leaders are angry about the Mormon practice of posthumous baptism by proxy — specifically, ceremonies in which the names of Jewish Holocaust victims are used to offer the departed a chance to convert in the afterlife.

Now, I can understand calling people who participate in these ceremonies arrogant, insensitive and disrespectful — but beyond that, who really cares? In the end it’s meaningless. Nobody’s forcing anybody to convert and the jokes on them anyway because Jews don’t believe in a Christian-style afterlife. By making a big deal out of this, Jewish leaders only seem to be acknowledging that there’s some validity in all this.

Personally, I’d rather have Mormons try to convert me after I’m dead than have Jehovah’s Witnesses wake me up by ringing my doorbell on Sunday mornings when I’m alive.

Celebration

Cidu Bill on Sep 3rd 2010

Tuesday, Hamas gunmen opened fire on and killed four Israeli civilians, including a pregnant woman, in the West Bank. Following the attack, more than three thousand Gazans held a celebration in the streets.

Three thousand Gazans celebrated the murder of four civilians.

Now, I understand there are two sides to almost every issue, and I even understand what leads people to commit acts of terrorism… but I’m sorry, these people aren’t human beings. Aside from the fact that feeling pride over the murder of four civilians is kind of pathetic, how twisted do you have to be to take to the streets and hold a mass celebration?

As of this morning, international outrage still seems to be on hold.

Ann Coulter: ”Obama is Not a Muslim”

Cidu Bill on Sep 3rd 2010

“The nonsense about President Obama being a Muslim has got to stop.”

Wait for it, wait for it…

“I rise to defend him from this absurd accusation by pointing out that he is obviously an atheist.”

And then it gets really weird…
