Qualified LOL

This whole week’s storyline is annoying me — either allow Luann to be alone in her room with Quill or don’t, Mr. DeGroot; you look like an idiot pouting about it — but the final panel did make me laugh.

Even though Sonny and Chere are “older” (in terms of popularity, if not actual age), I think Captain and Tennille are more likely to qualify as a “Geezer” reference. And I have mentioned it before, does a comic qualify as a “Geezer” if the whole joke is that the person is making a geezer reference and doesn’t realize it?

He could have said “Donny and Marie” and it would have qualified as an “Ewww”.

“Donny and Marie” would have been a Sally Forth reference made by Ted Forth.

OB Geezer: I remember watching all three variety shows, the Glen Campbell show, and the Red Skeleton show in it’s final years.

How about Beyonce and Jay-Z? Or is that old news already too?

To clarify, the reason I said that “Donny and Marie” would have been an “Ewww” is not an indictment on their talents, it is because they are brother and sister. Mr. Degroot is implying that starting out as a recording artist duo can lead to “something more”

Bill, My wife and I still have these ‘disagreements’ re the children. She’s a little naive and I try and offer her the male perspective. I am still not convinced my daughters should have been allowed to color their hair at 13. Hard to argue when they already knew their mother did that too.

Mr. DeG isn’t acting like a pouting idiot; he’s acting like a dad who’s still trying to get a handle on his daughter’s hotness while not appearing to be threatened … and failing miserably.

I agree. While I’ve only seen a little bit of their show, I know who Sonny & Cher are. But I don’t have any idea who “the Captain and Tennille” are. (Don’t bother telling me; who they are isn’t the point.)

The Eurythmics also count as a couple like in the comic.

Thing of the bright side, furrykef: at least the Captain and Tenille aren’t listed in the Urban Dictionary.

“Captain and Tenille aren’t listed in the Urban Dictionary”

I wonder if “Muskrat Love” is?

Tom, the hair thing never really bothered me. When my older son was 16, he had his friend shave his head the night before Halloween. His friend told him “You dad’s going to be angry,” and my son assured him I wouldn’t care.

The only part that bothered me was that I’d just paid $27 for a haircut for him three days earlier, and why couldn’t he have come up with this stunt before that?

Or NOT use the good towels when performing such hair acts!

at least the Captain and Tenille aren’t listed in the Urban Dictionary.

    Yet.

I understand this one completely, and Dad isn’t pouting about anything. Dad knows that Luann is 16 and will be making her own decisions soon. He’s trying to get in some last-minute guidance because he knows that flatly telling her what to do rarely works on 16-year-old daughters. So he gives her the freedom to choose for herself, while also making his position clear… or at least, clear to people who remember Sonny, Cher, Toni Tenille, and the Captain.

Yeah, Sonny and Cher are a little more famous (if not more recent) than the Captain and Tenille. Despite the fact that they haven’t recorded music together for quite some time, both went on to have relatively recent appearances in the public eye - Cher as a solo artist, and Sonny as a politician, and then because of his untimely death. Though I know who the Captain and Tenille are, I can’t name any of their songs off the top of my head, and I can’t recall any news about them after the end of their singing career. (I’m assuming it ended…)

While I am as annoyed as CIDU Bill about Mr. DG’s attitude, I’m surprised that he and his wife appear to have switched sides on this argument. Seems to me that it was previously Mrs. D who was making a big stink about who their children spent time with of the opposite sex, while Mr. D had a more relaxed attitude - or was that just in regards to Brad, and they switch roles for their daughter?

Tom, this was all done at his friend’s house. Not my problem. And as it turned out, I might not have cared about my son’s haircut, but his friend did catch hell for the mess.

As it happens, a month or so ago during a bbq at our home, my son and some of his cohorts decided that another friend needed his head shaved. I made them take the project to the street in front of our house, next to a handy storm drain.

turquoise - seems to be a ‘which kid’ thing, although even accounting for that it’s not quite the same thing. Mrs D doesn’t like Toni, because she’s afraid she might hurt Brad. Mr D doesn’t seem hostile to Quill, he just doesn’t want him and Luann to have privacy to prevent hanky panky. Completely different kinds of overprotectiveness. And both kind of annoying.

    $27 for a haircut? Yikes!

I would think most modern 16-year-olds would at least know who Cher is.

  19. James Pollock Sep 3rd 2010 at 08:24 am 19

Even if a modern 16-year-old recognizes Cher as a singer (and not an actress) they probably don’t know that Sonny married her while she was still a teenager.

Maybe he’ll use the Thompson Twins and be forced to explain why there were three of them?
