I Spry

A question mostly for the geezers, I guess…
My niece recently defined to the word “spry” as a compliment directed at older people. And I don’t know… is it really? Or is it more a “damning with faint praise” sort of thing, like “at your age, I’d expect you to be a lot more feeble than you are.”
My personal favorite age-related left-handed compliment took place a few years ago when I participated in a Frisbee football game with a bunch of college age kids, well less than half my age. One of them said to me, afterward, “Jesus, you must have been real good when you were young.”
I really wanted to say “I’m better than you now, you young whippersnapper,” but I opted for politeness and just thanked him instead.
