Crankshaft is actually Billy from Family Circus, 70 years later.

A few months or so ago, the market suffered a surprising and precipitous dip, and the explanation was - no foolin’ - that someone had accidentally unplugged the computer. Either that or some software glitch. Now that I think about it more, I’m not sure if I am remember it correctly in any event, but I wonder if that’s being referenced here.

I made the Billy/Crankshaft observation a couple years ago on comics curmudgeon. I mean, it’s obvious, right? Once you get your head around the concept, it’s fairly easy to let Crankshaft go.

@Dan: The explanation I remember being floated for a few days is that a trader typed “billion” instead of “million” and pushed Enter without proofing. The explanation seemed to change every couple of days after that until everybody lost interest.

On a different note, I like the ‘Christ, Crank’s senility’s creeping a little faster’ look the other fellas give each other.

Crankshaft’s cohort with the glasses is Earl Pickles’ twin brother.

They in fact do have failsafes to prevent wild swings in stock prices now, don’t they? In which case he’s (quasi) correct.

John DiFool — that would be similar to a “circuit breaker”, more than a “circus breaker”.

Ian, that was CIDU Bill’s whole point, sort of. Of course, it’s “circuit”, not “circus”. Isn’t it hilarious how little kids and senile old people get sort-of-similar-sounding words confused with each other?

Personally, I thought it was cute the time I told my son, then around age 2, that something was “excellent”, and he looked confused and picked up his stuffed elephant and showed it to me. But that’s a “funny once”, and not something I would consider the basis for a cartooning career.

Why does Crankshaft have nose zits?

  10. Cidu Bill Jul 21st 2010 at 01:26 am 10

It’s not nose zits. It’s necrotizing fasciitis. Batiuk hasn’t used that one yet.
