What the guy means is "Let's pretend you didn't see the insulting term "Slug" on my list". Though why he's so sensitive after "lump, clod, or fool" ruins the joke. Salt draws the water out of a slug's body, and as the slug's body is mostly water and they have practically no protection from the outside it's very easy to dehydrate and kill them this way.
