I use my phone a lot, but it’s mostly for work, and my ring tone is a ’50s-’60s mechanical phone. I found the sound online and tweaked it into a ring tone. I also have a ’30s mechanical tone, but it’s too tinny.

Arvy #12 - Love it, may steal it! Right now Mom gets Ernestine saying, “One ringy dingy… TWO ringy dingy…” because she loves Lily Tomlin.

One of my less-trustworthy friends gets Creep by Radiohead: “…I’m a creep, I’m a weirdo…” but he doesn’t know that. My company’s Health & Safety Nazi gets air raid sirens with a very loud and official-sounding voiceover shouting, “Warning! Warning! It’s the wife! It’s THE WIFE!” My boss gets a whole verse of, “You’re mean one Mr Grinch, you really are a heel. You’re as cuddly as a cactus, you’re as charming as an eel. Mr Grinch, you’re a bad banana with a greasy black peel”. which brings me and everyone else who works with him endless delight.

When I get a text, it is almost always from one of my kids. My text tone is Charlie Brown’s teacher (wah-wah-WAH-WAH-wah…) which is kind of perverse. Now it’s not how the kids hear grownups, it’s how a grownup hears her kids.

So far, I’ve only been able to find a way to set separate ringtones for people in my contacts list and people not in my contacts list, not for specific callers.

But it helps, because my instant reactions are usually, “That’s someone I know; I should probably see who it is,” and “I don’t know who that is; I can let it go to voice mail.”

I also dislike music as ring tones. But then, I only turn on the cell a couple of times a week.

My phone uses rings (remember the noise the phones that sat on your desk and were tethered by a cord made?). I found some open source MP3s of sixteen different styles of ring sound and massaged them with the Audacity program before loading them on the phone.

I really dislike music as ring tones because the volume most set their phones at, plus small tinny speakers, equate to a cringe worthy fuzzed out mess making me think I would rather be eating live frogs.

Minor A (heh) @15, a co-worker has the sound of a shaver as his ringtone, and has baffled and amused many when pulling out his ringing cell phone and then pretending to shave.

Only my boss and my daughter have a separate ringtone on my phone right now. The boss is the complete “Harvey the Wonder Hamster” by Weird Al, only because it was the only music clip I had that was short enough to be a ringtone. Really low on the priority list. My daughter, Sam, has a clip from Looney Tunes: “‘Morning, Sam. Oh, good morning, Ralph.”

My phone just rings - that way I can hear it across the room. But one of my co-workers has Dino’s bark (from the Flintstones - Ab-bab-bab-bab-bab) as his wife’s ringtone. Passive-aggressive? Maybe, but it always gets a laugh.
