A few months ago, I mentioned as a joke that one of these I was going to put up a new post every hour for a full day, just to see what would happen. A few people told me I should actually do it, and once person asked me not to, since it would destroy her productivity for a day.
I have to admit, that one clinched it: so it begins tonight at midnight.

Choosing my new phone’s ringtones for family and friends — and admittedly I put a lot more thought into these choices than I probably should — it occurred to me that this can be a remarkably passive-aggressive operation: after all, the person calling you is the one person who will probably never know what ringtone you chose for him.
Not that I would ever assign an insulting ringtone to anybody, but how easy would it be to have your brother-in-law’s phone calls accompanied by Beck’s “Loser”? And come on, who doesn’t know somebody they’d like to associate with Pink’s “Stupid Girls”?
And then there’s Lily Allen’s ever-popular “F*** you, f*** you very, very much.”

Many ponderous articles have been written about soccer’s failure to win the love of the American public, and just as many articles over the years have proclaimed that soccer has indeed arrived now that Pele is playing in the United States, or the World Cup is actually getting noticed here. Soccer was also supposed to become a major spectator sport as soon as the first generation of kids who played in youth soccer leagues grew up (that ship seems to have sailed; my brother played youth soccer, and he’s 46 years old).
As far as I’m concerned, the root problem is simple: We call it soccer and the rest of the world calls it football — and therefore we will always consider it a foreign sport and will never really embrace it.
