These were back-to-back on my Chronicle page this past Friday. The second one (Speed Bump) is a definite CIDU, though: “Superman flavor”??

And of course Batman is mad because Robin got the ice cream named after
    Superman and not Batman.

Superman is usually just vanilla with red and blue colored swirls. Kids love it.

yeah. i’m from Michigan. i had to move to Ohio when i was 5, but i still remember Superman oh so well. it was the BEST.

oh. but yeah. a few stores here in Ohio have it, but only one near me, so that’s kinda sad….

We have Superman, Batman, and Spiderman snowball flavors here in New Orleans.

I’m from Ohio, Superman was a big flavor at our Frisch’s Big Boy (back when they had ice cream). My brother got it all the time; I didn’t see the appeal. It really didn’t have much of a “flavor”, it just tasted overly sweet to me.

Thanks for the link, captainswift. In the past few years, I’ve seen lots of frozen confections on-a-stick that look like cartoon characters, but only sold by ice cream trucks, but this is clearly just regular ice cream in a cone from an ice cream shoppe.

I’ve lived in Michigan going on 18 years, and have not ever been tempted to try Superman ice cream. Probably has something to do with the fact that, once I discovered that Michigan also has Mackinac Island Fudge ice cream (like fudge swirl with choco bits), I never looked back.

I lived in MI for 4 years and it was pretty much exactly that age where the sweeter the ice cream the better. I LOVED Superman ice cream; that article has it dead on, it isn’t just vanilla with food coloring there are definitely different flavors in there. I’d totally forgotten about it since I moved when I was 10. Thanks for the memory!

Holy hat. I would never have guessed that this was an actual flavor. I thought this was a clever (?) gay-subtext comic. There’s always those rumors about how Batman and Robin are gay (old man, young ward, suspect relationship right there dontchaknow), so I figured here Batman was jealous that Robin wanted “Superman” flavor.

I hope I’m not the only one to read it this way…

Dan, there’s no contradiction between your reading and it being an actual flavor. Indeed, knowing it’s a real flavor makes the jealousy joke better.

Kroger here in Illinois carries Superman flavor ice cream. I think it tastes nasty, personally. No idea if it tastes like real Superman or not.

Considering the whole homoerotic speculation about Batman and Robin, whose flames were fanned by the SNL “Ambiguously Gay Duo” series of short animations, this Speed Bump is definitely an Eeew for me. This strip zoomed in color makes it more clear that Robin’s licking the ice cream (I wasn’t sure if that was tongue or lips, a top lip-line would have helped), as well as the coloration of the ice cream: http://comics.com/zoom/323999/

Back in the 60’s when the Adam West Batman was on TV a local ice cream parlor had a Batman flavor. It was dark black in color and the flavor was licorice.

    Educational.
I had assumed it was a disguised Clark Bar(Kent)

  17. Kamino Neko Jun 23rd 2010 at 10:50 pm 17

Clark bar Kent is his Hebrew cousin.

@ The Bad Seed #14–also, where exactly is Robin’s left hand?! So he’s eating ice cream and, um, THINKING about Superman?!

superman is vanilla with food coloring???

thats blasmphemy where i come from (SE ME) :)

one of the primary flavors is blue moon, which is another (slightly less so though) regional flavor. its also another flavor that many try to pretend to have.

These were both lols for me. :) And if you wanted to look at it that way, Speedbump could have further subtext (Robin going for Superman instead of Batman? HMMMM??).
