I get it — but wouldn’t this have made infinitely more sense if he’d come out half-man half cell phone?

I wonder if the joke is, if he had not been texting he would have noticed
the fly being in the booth with him. Variation of the dont text and drive.

Maybe, just as texting while driving can cause an automobile accident, texting while transporting can cause a molecular transporter accident. Other than that, I got nothin’. The assistant seems rather blase about the whole thing; I guess once transporter technology is here then accidents will be rather frequent. There will probably be fly-men support groups in the future.

I assume that the transmissions from his phone were what caused the transporter mixup. The line could have also been something about not using his cellphone while transporting, but the current hot topic is texting while driving, which is more universally admitted to be dangerous, even by those who routinely talk on hand-held phones while driving.

And just in case there are people who don’t get the pop-culture reference, the cartoon is a reference to the brilliant 1958 horror film “The Fly” (or, sadly, the 1986 remake).

Despite Marshall#1’s logical explanation, I still agree he should’ve come out half-man, half-cellphone. (though doesn’t that describe most young people these days?)

    What’s Sarah Palin doing there?

I think the comic’s fine as it is. It’s a pop-culture shorthand: giant fly=transporter mishap. What happened to cause it is deliberately ambiguous, other than the idea that he was distracted during the process and it led to disastrous results, like someone texting while driving.

    Was he insexting?

    Was he using an iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiphone?

Or perhaps he was molecularly transporting while buzzed?

    Agreed with Dysfunctional #8.

Also: the original Fly movie’s great, but I love the remake. Cronenberg rox.

    “Help me! Help meeee!”

I loved the original Fly movie and have imitated David Hedison’s plea on more than one occasion. Cronenberg’s was just sort of gross.

    Oh! I got it!! (finally)

He was texting with his iPhone (emphasize the “i”) while being molecular transported … now he has ginormous (giant) …. eyes !!!

Well, he’s got a fly head. If you haven’t seen or heard of the movie, which is hard to believe, then it won’t make any sense.

I think it works fine as is, but I agree that having a cell phone head would be funnier.
