Elyrest: ”At least it’s not an exclamation point; but really — the Empire State Building!!!”

The middle two frames are simply showing the view from the window of the
apartment. I don’t think she is referring to the view but what is happening
off screen. Some times a building is just a building.

And sometimes a building is just a cigar. Specifically, a cigar that you use to [CENSORED].

The middle 2 panels are also showing the passage of time. Panel 2 has stars or city lights in the dark, while panel 3 shows the sun coming up. Mind you, the Empire State Building is probably also metaphorical here. Slightly less obvious than a train going through a tunnel, but since this is 9CL, I think we can assume a bit of Arlo is intended anywhere we might see it.

@DemetriosX (#3) — except there’s stars in the third panel, too. I thought it was an especially large, magical, erotic (use your best Zapp Brannigan voice here) moon.
No, where I got my Arlo on was the “compounding your interest.” (Work with me: “comPOUNDing your INterest.”) However, since her Lucy-van-Peltish nose is deeply anerotic, the strip just makes me want to shower.

I gave up on this interminable storyline several weeks ago. Is that Lt. Kisel? Is he Juliette’s dad?

Yes, I believe it’s the Austrian POW, now a concert singer. But we have also been given glimpses of the American espionage handler (Bill?) hidden away in a mental hospital but probably pretending an ailment.

Yes it’s Kiesl, and yes the IMPLICATION so far is that he’s Juliette’s father, though that hasn’t been explicitly stated yet. The closest they’ve come so far, is Edna and Kiesl sitting on a little hill in a park, and she says “someday our granddaughter might sit on this same spot and feel as happy as I do right now”. The next panel shows Edda sitting there with Amos, same spot, and she says she loves that spot because she always feels like someone is keeping it warm for her, or something.
So that’s a clear implication that Edda is indeed THEIR granddaughter. But yeah, not clearly stated yet.
Brooke’s storylines ALWAYS stretch out forever. You ever tried to follow Pibgorn? You’ll get 4 strips in a row just giving an alternate view of the same scene. Honestly, it’s more about the art and the mood than about pushing a storyline along. And that’s fine — that’s his ‘thing’, that’s the spirit of his work. Once you accept that, you’re much happier.
Anyway, things might be getting to a head… in today’s strip Edna has gone to visit the general-or-whatever dude to invite him to the engagement party… methinks the proverbial feces is about to hit the proverbial fan…

I felt this strip had to show up here (since how could this possibly have been published in any US newspaper?). But I missed the shift from the 2nd panel to the 3rd panel, mirroring Kiesl’s realization of what “that” was. For the second time today, CIDU showed me I missed something big.

This is the strip that confirms Kiesl as the father, and, if it isn’t confirmation, then it’s horribly misleading:

The middle panels are really low contrast, so I thought I saw one head in panel and the other was apparently out of sight… perhaps he was down on his knees, begging for forgiveness?
paperboy Jun 1st 2010 at 10:25 pm 12
The two middle panels are one long image separated by a panel bar.

Right, paperboy #12, you took the words right out of my mouth. I knew exactly what was going on in this strip, but I totally missed the Building and it’s significance! Thanks CIDU Bill!!

Oh, and Elyrest!
paperboy Jun 2nd 2010 at 02:44 pm 15
Does anyone get this strip in the newspaper? I’m curious if the subtle shading comes through on paper.

A thumbnail? What for?
