Thought for Today

Cidu Bill on May 21st 2010

You really have to figure that a woman who gets a big Winnie the Pooh tattooed on her right upper back and a big Eeyore tattooed on the left upper back is going to regret it some day.

You would hope, considering how bad some tattoos are, but still people get ‘em.

Oh, and for the bonus points: her name is written out under Eeyore and her boyfriend/husband’s name is written out under Winnie. At least I hope it’s her current boyfiend or husband.

I assume this was precipitated by something and wasn’t simply a random “Though for Today”?

  4. Cidu Bill May 21st 2010 at 03:55 pm 4

That would be one hell of a specific hypothetical, Judge Mental, huh?

It’s tank-top weather on the East Coast today, and I was standing behind Winnie and Eeyore at the supermarket.

    @Bill (#2) - I’ve always wondered something:

If you break up with someone after getting their name tattooed on your body, is it better or worse if your next significant other has the same name - especially if they have to see you naked to spot the tattoo.

Seeing someone else’s name would be kinda disturbing, but seeing ones own name would be WAY creepy and stalkerish.

Especially if it was the Disney Pooh and Eeyore. Ugh.

In my day it was monogrammed towels that were regretted. The more things change, the more they stay the same.

I have known a few people who split-up with someone after having tattooed that person’s name one their body. In each case, the solution was to get a more ornate tattoo inked over the top of the ex’s name.

Doesn’t Kate Goslin have tattoos of Pooh Bear? She regrets hers, I know that.

Any tattoo is probably going to be regretted some day. Are you going to wear that same shirt every day for the rest of your life? Why would you want to have anything on your SKIN the rest of your life?? (I except Marines and military. MotorCycle gangs can SMD.)

I don’t understand. Why would she be more likely to regret these than any other tattoo? Winnie the Pooh is cool.

    @Judge #8,
One of the classic examples is Johnny Depp. The tattoo said “Winona Forever,” but after the breakup, it got changed to “Wino Forever.”
I’ve seen altered tattoos firsthand, but nothing is better than that one.

I saw too many tattoos ravaged by time when I was young. Now in my mid 60s and seeing the effects of time on my own body, I’m glad it was not one of the numerous youthful follies that I committed.

Interesting that she put her name under the donkey - if the names were reversed, would that imply her significant other was a jackass?

  15. Cidu Bill May 21st 2010 at 11:51 pm 15

David, I’m pretty sure if she’d put all that much thought into it, she wouldn’t have done it in the first place.

Eeyore is my favorite. I love donkeys.

But I would never get a tattoo of anything. I think something is cool for like 3 months, then I get over it and am on to the next thing. Like right now, I’m really into Heavy Rain, but three months from now I wouldn’t be happy with that origami bird on my back with the words “This Rain is About to Get Heavy” under it.

@ Winter Wallaby (11) - Winnie ther Pooh (”don’t you know what ‘ther’ means?”) was (and is) cool. Disney plastic rendition of “Winnie Pooh” is simply revolting, in every respect. I’m not about to let my kid watch any “Pooh” until he has read both of the original books.

  18. mkilby May 22nd 2010 at 06:10 am 18

Ooops. Please interpolate the missing apostrophe-s.

I have only seriously considered getting one tattoo: the number “55″, because I recently survived a blood sugar level of 55 mol/L (that’s a level of about 1000 for you Americans) — 5-7 being normal, higher usually indicating type II diabetes, and 30 usually inducing coma and death. Ironically — or, perhaps, appropriately — as a diabetic, it’s not a good idea to get tattoos.

  20. Molly J May 22nd 2010 at 07:56 am 20

    Hear hear, mkilby!

  21. Powers May 22nd 2010 at 08:18 am 21

“Oooh, look, I’m cool because I like the *original* of anything, and anything that isn’t the original is worthless and trite!”

  22. Winter Wallaby May 22nd 2010 at 11:34 am 22

    Interpolating apostrophes, as requested:

Dis’ney plastic’ ren’dition of “Winnie’Pooh” is sim’ply revolting, in every respect””’s. I’m not about t’o let my k’i'd watch any “Pooh” until he ha’s read bo’th of the original book’s.

OK, mkilby, that explains why you would regret getting these tattoos (under the unstated assumption that these were Disney tattoos, and not line drawings from the original books). I’m still not getting why she would be more likely to regret getting these tattoos than any other tattoos.

I think it’s because the things that seem cool to us as teens or twentysomethings aren’t as cool when we’re, say, fiftysomething. Sure, Winnie-the-Pooh is awesome, but you might feel differently about him when you’re older.

You might wear a Goofy t-shirt when you’re 21, but perhaps you’d be less likely to do so at 61.

  24. Cidu Bill May 22nd 2010 at 01:52 pm 24

Of course that being said, I’m one of those fifty-somethings of whom you speak and I’m still fond of my Donald Duck shirt, and my wife is wearing her Batman gardening shirt even as we speak…

  25. Chuck May 22nd 2010 at 03:01 pm 25

My stepdad wears lots of Grumpy shirts. XD

  26. NitricAcid May 22nd 2010 at 06:40 pm 26

John- you cannot have a blood sugar level of 55 mol/L. That would mean 18 kilograms of sucrose dissolved in every litre of your blood. Fifty-five millimoles per litre (mmol/L) I could believe.

  27. John in Tronna May 22nd 2010 at 09:05 pm 27

Well, if you’re going for original AND cool, go for “Winnie” — that is, “Winnipeg” — regimental mascot of the Fort Garry Horse, inspiration for Pooh, and symbol now represented on the formation patch of 2 Canadian Brigade Group.

    Beware of imitations! :D

  28. John in Tronna May 22nd 2010 at 09:12 pm 28

Ops, NitricAcid, you are right. I don’t sem to be hiting my double leters lately.

  29. Todd May 25th 2010 at 03:13 pm 29

My sister didn’t get her first tattoo (that I know of) until she was nearly forty with a grown daughter (who already had a tattoo).
