More than one child has been shot by police who saw a "gun" or "knife," which was later revealed to be a candy bar. Or, rather, police have shot more than one child they claimed to have seen holding a "weapon" and investigators discovered a candy bar, but no weapon, at the scene.

It's the "New Jersey" part that confuses me. I work in the toy department at Wal-Mart and all of our -- bright orange -- cap guns come with a slip of paper that says that they're not for sale in the State of New *York*. 8-)

I took the very specific example out of the blue to be the joke. Funny to some in the tradition of Monty Python.

People are idiots, politicians are professionals at it.

They're children. The purpose of play, even "violent" play, is to help them understand and cope with the world-- and to learn the difference between make believe and reality.

We're adults. Our job is to teach them the difference between make believe and reality.

When we behave as if toy guns and play violence are the same as the real thing we only confuse, frighten and mis-teach children. Their understanding of reality and fantasy in relation to violence is muddied, and worse, they are forced to internalize and suppress their fears and aggressions rather than let them out through the pressure-valve of innocent play.

The appropriate response when a child points a toy gun at you and goes "bang bang" is not a five minute ivy league lecture on the intrinsic violence and evil of guns. The appropriate response is to slap your hand to your chest and yell "ya got me, pardner."

Good one, Frank. And I think you were even Fair and Balanced (C). P.S. It's amusing to hear speakers with certain British accents pronounce "cretin" with a short /e/. Such a cretin, he's got me frettin'.

Interesting... This particular Bizarro was in our Sunday comics, not Saturday. It was larger, too (more visible shelf space). And it had 22 hidden objects instead of 17. I got a bigger laugh out of that than I did the "official" joke.

Wow. Apologies for the double post but I just did a quick Google for the email thing I mentioned above (it's here, BTW http://www.naturist-christians.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=58&t=6137) and discovered that the "toast chewed into the shape of a gun" story has been stolen (or, to be charitable, "also experienced") by a widespread sampling of internet humanity -- from NRA members to advice columnists.
