Singapore Bill, any time I’ve been told I was being “white” was a reference to my poor Spanish and my dislike of Nicaraguan and Salvadoran food, not my proper English and aversion to crime. Every Hispanic person who called me white spoke proper English, had a job, was not involved in crime, and was serious about MY education, if not his or her own.

Ham on Rye is PERFECT.
I’m trying to figure out the marriages of the hindi, mandarin, german and english. I know the english speaker is likely to hook up w/ anyone, but how do a german and mandarin or a hindi mandarin or a hindi german, manage to meet, who is married to whom?

re way back in high school, what about collegiate mod and block? I think that was local to the DC area.

FeelinOld: You are only partially right. While it is usually person’s of a non-white group who attempt to disparage others in their group for “acting white,” it is, in reality, an expression of self-loathing. Think about it; when they say someone is “acting white” they mean he/she speaks proper English, is serious about education, has a job, and isn’t involved in crime.

Mike #20 - If we go that route, you have to break it down to: Nerd, Dweeb, Spaz, SpaceCadet, Doofus, Nimrod, Poindexter (am I showing my age yet?) and Dork versus, Jock, Motorhead, Party Animal, Gangsta and probably many others I don’t remember.

On the main subject like CIDU Bill I didn’t know any of those name but having heard the Oreo, Coconut and Apple slurs kind of got the joke…

The interesting part of these type of slurs is that that are almost universally slung at people by those of their own race which could be construed as disparaging to caucasians. So we are back in good old double standard ville. Many among us complain about inequality, but you can’t have equality unless you have equality in all things good AND bad.

David #19: First language would be OK except in the case of a friends daughter who at four is speaking English, Mandarin, German and Hindi (the languages of the four grandparents) and quite often switches from one to the other mid sentence when she knows the word she wants in one language but not the other, which is very confusing for those of us who are linguistically challenged.

Mike #20: Jock or Nerd, I’ve never really been able to answer that question, I played Baseball, Basketball, and for one year Football but was also in a stage band and on the ‘Reach for the Top’ team, as a result I never really ‘fit’ in with any of the cliques. (And really pissed off the basketball coach when RFTT took precedence (ended up benched for a month))

Mike #14: That would “gentile on the inside”, wouldn’t it? And other than the Yiddish expression “goyische kopf”, all I can think of is “ham on rye”, which is at least a sandwich, even if not a sandwich cookie.

I know what you mean, Nitric. When folks hear I’m from South Philadelphia, they automatically assume that I eat truckloads of cheese steaks and pizza, drink gallons of Dago red, enjoy opera, and make love like your average mink, and would kill for a Tastykake. It’s all very annoying.
