Ehh, I don’t think the second one’s so Eww. The others, though…

@furrykef, I dunno the image of four guys sitting around watching “the sexy scenes” seems like a group masturbation reference. That’s kind of an ewww/Arlo for me.

apricoco#2, they take turns. It wouldn’t be so worn out if they “shared” the scenes.

When I saw the “Off the Mark” I knew it would end up here. And I did utter an audible Ewww. Not so much for the others.

    Serial v. Batch

Group or solo, it still seems like a rather icccky joke for a newspaper comic.

I can recall nearly the same joke as the third comic in Beetle Bailey 30 years ago with Cookie. Its not really that memorable of a joke, I don’t know why it has stuck with me.

Isn’t the last one a rip-off of Beetle Bailey’s Cookie? I seem to recall complaints that his food lost all taste when he stopped smoking.

I think the Fusco was more Arlo than eww.

Grampa’s famous cigar ash chili. Yum.

Yup…we have a winner in number one … (all because the dog did a number two?)

  11. PaulG Mar 13th 2010 at 12:41 pm 11

Is the second one also a Hey Geezers thing? VHS is definitely getting there. I’ve never actually seen a worn-out VHS.

  12. DanV Mar 13th 2010 at 01:04 pm 12

I have a chili recipe book, something like 100 ways to make prize-winning chili. One of the recipes includes cigar ash as an essential component. Still an eww…

Meanwhile, what’s the deal with the locations of the kids’ ears on the last one? I found that much more disturbing than the actual comic content.

PaulG apparently never had a child that was obsessed with a movie back when the only option would have been a VHS tape.

Oh, it’s not just children. Back when I was in college, the mother of one of my friends was obsessed with Patrick Swayze, and wore out at least three copies of Dirty Dancing.

The second, VHS, ‘toon is for those of us in another generation. VHS relies on magnetic tape, which requires contact with a “head” or reader to exchange its information. Thus, over time – or with extensive usage – simple friction will wear out the recording. The more frequent the usage, the sooner the tape will wear out. Hence the, umm, focused wear. :-)

    @Bill #10

    > all because the dog did a number two?

No, “I hid the ring in food, the dog ate it, I had to wait …” is only an “ew”

“I tried again” ie same ring in more food, which she has some of in her mouth, that gets the “EEWWW!!!”

But since I was forewarned, it was also a lol for me.

The strange thing is that he’s referring to it as a “VHS tape” instead of just as a “videotape”.

  19. yello.cape.cod Mar 13th 2010 at 04:41 pm 19

I think Betamax tapes were supposed to be superior quality, and stuff. At any rate, I’ve never heard of anyone wearing out a Beta tape.*

[*In case anyone is sarcasm-in-print impaired, this is a joke.]

The frequent fast forward and rewind of the tape would also stretch and stress the tape, causing the heads to track poorly over those areas where a lot of rewinding was done, since the data is encoded along stripes that went diagonally across the tape.

As for “VHS” vs “videotape” I suspect that VHS is easier to fit in a word bubble.

I think this use of “VHS tape” is approaching neologism-ism. If this strip had been written 20 years ago he probably would have said “movie”, or maybe “tape” or “video”. All of those would have suggested video tape. But now “movie” or “video” suggest DVD or stream or pay per view and “tape” is a stop and think word.
