Arthur : Is the joke that butterflies are so slow, they’ll take all day to fly 50 meters? The usual suspects of turtles or snails wouldn’t work instead?

Butterflies don’t generally fly in a straight line.

Many people notice butterflies only when the butterflies are looking for food.
When they’re traveling (like migrating monarchs), they go straight and very fast.

(Not the same Arthur that sent this in.)

Can anyone help with the third panel? Not that panels 1, 2, and 4 are that interesting.

I don’t read this strip, but is there an interesting reason why the one dog talks, wears a hat, reads a newspaper, and stands on two feet, while the other only thinks and walks like a dog? Other than the perpetually amusing, “If Pluto’s a dog, what is Goofy?” theme.

And if the first one is not a dog, do I want to know what it is?

Turtles and snails have been done to death as the epitome of slowness; butterflies makes the joke seem fresh…
Forrester#3- This is a stretch, but maybe Arlo is thinking of a line from Simon&Garfunkel’s “Old Friends”, a mournful tune that deals with old age: “… sat on their park-bench like book-ends/ lost in their overcoats…”

The butterflies are recurring if uncommon “characters” (to the extent that they don’t have names or dialogue, but they recur as a collective). So it makes sense to use them rather than making up new animal guests (no turtles or snails have shown up in Overboard that I know of).

The talking dog with the hat has a backstory, years back. The mind of one of the Green Ship pirates got swapped with that of the ship dog. Somewhere, a pirate continues to turn in circles before laying down to sleep. At first, Raymond just visited a lot, but eventually he became part of the crew. He kept the Green Ship hat, though.

    Dave #6,

I seem to remember Raymond (dog with the hat) was originally Cecilia’s dog/protector. Cecilla being one of the green ship pirates that also served as a love interest for Capt. Crowe for a while. But she just vanished one day as far as I can recall. Kinda like the other two Pirates that were up in the crow’s nest all the time.

    Was there disappearance ever explained?
