VIDU

Cidu Bill on Mar 9th 2010

Several people sent me this (to me personally that is, not to CIDU) telling me how funny it was.
They neglected to tell me why.

“Trololo” is the new internet meme, replacing the old “Hitler is angry at something” meme.

Apparently the video is from a 1970s era Russian TV show.

Eduard Gil (or Hil, depending on the translation) is the new Rick Astley.

So the joke is you get someone to look at this awful video?

    Yeah. Very funny.

    Ha.

  4. Charlene Mar 9th 2010 at 06:51 pm 4

And you know, if he’d shown up in America instead Lawrence Welk would have hired him.

I thought it was funny too. It was the juxtaposition between the Star Trek people and the alien of Tuvolololololo (most likely spelled wrong.) The reactions of the characters to the singing were perfect and the overacting of Willaim Shatner was perfect in this context. I don’t know who (or what?) that singer was, but I did love that he seemed to be singing to the metal design in the background. Were you a fan of the original series?

    no that funny

    those are funny

Nice to see Smiling Bob is picking up some gigs again, but Kirk sure seems threatened by the guy.

  8. Bob in Nashville Mar 9th 2010 at 07:40 pm 8

Looked to me like a way to give that musical performance what it deserves: get Captain Kirk and his crew to do it.

  9. Lumsden Mar 9th 2010 at 08:33 pm 9

The joke went on ‘way too long but it was a nice job of editing.

  10. Kit Mar 9th 2010 at 08:56 pm 10

As bad as (but not worse) than Mr. Spock’s Hobbit song.

  11. Nicole Mar 9th 2010 at 09:28 pm 11

I have no idea why it is funny, but I laughed hysterically.

  12. James Schend Mar 9th 2010 at 09:40 pm 12

At 45 seconds, that would have been funny. By the time it hits the 1:00 mark, all funny is gone. If you have the patience to sit through all 3:45, the funny has actually been replaced by a deep loathing of people who try to be comedians but don’t understand timing.

I would guess that people who find it funny as those who haven’t seen the tra-la-la video 47 times in the last week, since the video is pretty funny on its own.

  13. yellojkt Mar 9th 2010 at 10:41 pm 13

Definitely at least a minute too long. Perhaps two.

  14. George P Mar 9th 2010 at 10:42 pm 14

I agree that it was far too long, but I did laugh twice: the reaction to the falsetto, and when Kirk started to say something.

That’s my first time seeing that singer, so that may be a contributing factor.

I laughed hysterically at the video itself. I don’t know exactly why - I don’ t normally laugh just because something is bad. But this went on too long. If the new joke is the reactions, you don’t need the whole song.

Incidentally, Bill, do you normally expect your friends to tell you why something is funny? I kind of get mad when my friends do that.

  18. GP Mar 10th 2010 at 08:49 am 18

By “the video itself,” I meant the video of the song, not this video.

  19. CIDU Bill Mar 10th 2010 at 09:42 am 19

GP, generally speaking, after seeing the thing, I can tell why it’s funny, or at least why they think it is. This was more along the lines of “what drugs were you taking when you sent it to me?”

  20. Daniel J. Drazen Mar 10th 2010 at 09:47 am 20

    Worst. Television. Performance. Ever .

It worked well enough in that it depended on reaction shots to what has to be one of the worst televised musical numbers of all time. The singer even the plastic hair and bad teeth! This is one of those love-it-or-hate-it numbers; I loved it, but probably won’t replay it very often for fear of the lameness jumping off the screen and onto me.

  21. mkilby Mar 10th 2010 at 11:10 am 21

I emphatically agree with both CIDU Bill (19) and with Daniel’s (20) evaluation (incredibly lame). It makes me wonder “what in the world was Bill on when he posted it?”

  22. Nicole Mar 10th 2010 at 11:21 am 22

The tra-la-la video is SOOOOO very bad it is funny. Much like an Ed Wood movie. Cut in with the Star Trek video just makes it a bit funnier. About half way through I was thinking “ok I get it … enough”, but then toward the very end I started laughing again … who knows .

Oh and for the record … I could find absolutely no Arlo content here

  23. Elyrest Mar 10th 2010 at 11:52 am 23

“Oh and for the record … I could find absolutely no Arlo content here”

Nicole - I am so very disappointed. Please try harder.

  24. Karen Mar 10th 2010 at 11:55 am 24

Oh Lord, that was funny. Funny because of the way the bad singer cuts away to the crew’s reaction, the way Kirk tries to talk at one point and then gives up, it just meshes perfectly with the worst singing performance ever. Even the way the crew was wincing at one point. Yeah, it was a little too long, but not if you’re a Trek fan. :D

Of course you all noticed Sputnik orbiting Earth, right? Right?? Just me? Okay, then.

  25. Nicole Mar 10th 2010 at 12:46 pm 25

    Elyrest # 23 — sorry …
I guess the singer kinda has teh gay, but that alone doen’t put it in Arlo territory

  26. Karen Mar 10th 2010 at 02:38 pm 26

Kit, now I must demand a link to Mr. Spock’s hobbit song. My life will not be complete until I see it.

  27. George P Mar 10th 2010 at 03:34 pm 27

Here’s Leonard Nimoy singing the Hobbit song:

mkilby, I posted it because I didn’t understand it. That’s what idu.

  29. Lola Mar 10th 2010 at 05:16 pm 29

This is clearly an extremely explicit alien mating display and as such is well into Arlo territory. If you doubt it, just look at the way the crew winces. They KNOW what’s coming next.

  30. mkilby Mar 11th 2010 at 06:56 am 30

@ CIDU Bill - I didn’t get it, and I still don’t understand why anyone would want to waste time watching that “production”. There are times when I think the adjective “cult” is simply a euphamism for “garbage that has become inordinately popular, despite its worthlessness“. On the other hand, Spock (complete with ears) singing the “Hobbit Song” is so unbelievably and atrociously silly that it was worth watching the headline clip, just to get down to George P’s link (@27). On my system that version’s sound was very poor, but it also led to an uncut B/W version that played much better: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mPh12Q7cpeE

  31. Elyrest Mar 11th 2010 at 11:21 am 31

mkilby (30) - Sometimes you have to sort through garbage to find teasure.

  32. Jesse Mar 11th 2010 at 04:08 pm 32

    oh man that is AWESOME

  33. Todd Mar 13th 2010 at 03:48 pm 33

There was one bad edit; there was a shot of Spock, then a shot of McCoy with Spock behind him. I think the problem was that Spock by himself was in front of his station, then both were in front of the doors.

The whole thing was really lame, and not worth the nearly four minutes it took up.

I’ve never understood the rickroll thing. I’d rather be sent to “Never Going to Give You Up” than anything by anybody that’s currently popular.

  34. Detcord Mar 14th 2010 at 08:30 am 34

I agree with many of the comments made, but especially with Mark in Boston (3) and Lumsden (9). Some of the Star Trek cut-outs did make me laugh, a bit, but the price of hearing that song, and worse viewing that singer (whose mouth did not seem to sync with the noise he was producing) was way too high.

Normally, I would have followed that Spock singing link, but in this case I consider myself to have been warned.

It’s been almost a week since I first saw this incredibly horrible video. I was finally seeing an end to the laughing at odd times because. Now, thanks to the above link, I get to start the weaning all over again. It’s amazing how something so bad can be so funny.
