If he’s an ”old school vampire,” he shouldn’t be out in the sunlight

Not if he was REAL old-school!
In lots of vampire legends, vampires could walk in the sunlight. Dracula, IIRC, could, at least if Bram Stoker wanted him to in that particular chapter.

I can’t believe I know this, but in Twilight, vampires can walk in daylight.
*is ashamed*

Twilight is not “old school.” Twilight is sparkly emos kids who happen to drink blood.

There are some movies that have vampires using sunscreen and dark glasses or contact lenses to enable them to walk in sunlight.

I seem to recall that, as Rebecca says, in Brom Stoker’s novel Dracula could
with some small sacrifices go out in the daylight. I think he was stuck in
whatever form he had taken and something else but I can’t find the reference in the the text at the moment.
Here is a pointer to the Project Gutenberg EBook of Dracula, by Bram Stoker.

Your headline was exactly my thought when I read it. Even if the original Dracula didn’t have that problem. I really gotta read that book some time…

Sunlight didn’t become fatal for vampires until 1922 with Nosferatu.
It’s not fatal in legends (at least none that I know of) - many, though not all, legendary vampires go dormant during the day, but they’re not killed by sunlight, they’re just nocturnal creatures. It’s not even an impediment for Varney, Ruthven, or Carmilla (the three most well known pre-Dracula fictional vampires) and Dracula only loses his supernatural powers.
Even Nosferatu, some argue it wasn’t so much the sunlight as Ellen’s sacrifice that did it.

But if you look at Todd, you can tell by his school uniform that the “old school” being referred to is the Bela Lugosi Movie Vampire School, which is not the same school as Bram Stoker’s Dracula University. It’s been a while since I saw the film, but I think Bill’s right, that vampires from that particular old school shouldn’t be out in the daytime.

Actually …. I think the old school is in refernce to his mode of dress. Newer vampires dress far more casually.
And as many people have pointed out … in the classic Dracula, vampires could indeed walk in daylight.

Maybe he wears the Gem of Amara?

By the way if you have never read Brom Stoker’s novel I highly
recommend it. For the most part the story is told through personal
diary entries and newspaper articles. These people kept some detailed
diaries. 8^)

For those that only read things on the intraweb thingy nowadays, check out this:

Probably should have to start from the earliest bits.
I happened to have been reading the book and thought about doing it as a blog (with van Helsing doing podcasts) not 2 weeks before someone went ahead and did it. Thus proving there are no original ideas anymore. Don’t think they did the van Helsing podcast though.
