While I can understand his concern, I’m not seeing the actual joke here. This comic appeared, by the way, before Zach invented the “bonus panel”

Perhaps the joke is that shooting someone with an arrow IS what happens on Valentine’s day, especially if you’ve been educated by cartoons your whole life. (Though usually you’re shot by Cupid and it’s not as deadly)

I think the joke might be the crossbow since Cupid traditionally shoots people with a regular bow. He’s saying she messed up since she should have shot him with a regular bow, not a crossbow.

He’s not mad about the arrow sticking out of his chest and the fact that
he might be dying. He’s mad because she used a crossbow instead of a
recurve bow.
BTW, you can see just a bit of the bow in her hand, and the only kind it
could be is a crossbow.

Somehow, crossbows make left arms and hands very small. He is not pleased with that.

Either that, or they make right hands comparatively big (compare them both to the size of his head). I think the illustrator was trying to get fancy with perspective, and overdid it a bit.

The arrow seems to be fletched. Don’t crossbows generally use featherless bolts?

I was thinking that the girl had never heard of Valentine’s Day before, saw the pictures of Cupid around, and drew the entirely wrong conclusion about the nature of the holiday.
Mind you, I think the crossbow/recurve bow argument is slightly more likely to be true, but I think my interpretation is funny too.
