This is interesting because I’m at my sister’s house and my brother-in-law just got back from the store with a huge bottle of ketchup. Pretty much all he bought. My sister looks at him and opens the fridge and in ready sight a huge bottle of ketchup. She opens the cupboard door and there are two big bottles of ketchup. The only thing he could say was - “Maybe we’ll get snowed in.” She almost dumped one of the ketchup’s all over him.

When I first moved to Germany in 1995, my “in-laws” still tended to stock up on items that had been hard to get before unification. (Back then, it was standard practice to purchase reserves whenever such things became available.) I distinctly remember my bewilderment upon discovering three or four bottles of Heinz ketchup in their pantry. Luckily, they have long since got over the old “hamster” mentality.

I bought a small bottle of ketchup when I moved into my apartment almost a year ago, and I have used almost a quarter of it. For me, stocking up on ketchup would be buying another bottle. I think the only thing I ever use it for is hamburgers, and I don’t make them very often.

The Bizarro comic reminds me of the “Kids in the Hall” recurring sketch featuring the office workers: Cathy with a “C” and Kathy with a “K”.

Rainey, I think the humor of that Kids in the Hall sketch might be lost on my son Zak and his friends Zach and Zack.

Elyrest, I real;ly do not want to upset your sister but many years ago there was a man here in MN who frequently had to make a run to a local Target-type store. Razor blades, shaving cream, etc, etc. Turns out he had a little something going on the side and when they eventually split she found quantities of the above in various places in the house.

And yes he could do it here in back to back snow storms…we have the equipment and the know-how to deal with a lot of the white stuff. It is rare for the airport in the Twin Cities to close for very long.

Wait, why is it so weird to have three or four bottles of ketchup in the cupboard? I think I have three in there right now… The stuff lasts practically forever.

MrKenneth (6) - I don’t think my sister has anything to worry about in that department. He honestly didn’t see any of the ketchup.

Steven Hunter - Sometimes people have really tiny cupboards and have no room for much extra.

What gets me is the bottles marked “tomato ketchup”. Uh, is there any other kind of ketchup???

  10. Elyrest Feb 11th 2010 at 02:17 pm 10

Michael Brown - Yes, there are other kinds of ketchup. Ketchup is a sauce and in the US it is usually, but not always, tomato. There are other varieties out there - mushroom, banana and blueberry being ones I have seen.

The original ketchup/catsup sauce is a chinese fish sauce whose pronunciation is probably closer to catsup.

I remember once coming across a display of squash catsup. It looked like it had been made from one of the relatively dark-colored (as in deep orange) squashes. I’ve wondered ever since what it was like; really should haved bought a bottle.

    Diversity - with a “K” and a “C” but where’s the Green for Garl?

Ketchup of the heinze variety is a staple in our house and we always have 2 in the pantry and one in the fridge. lol.

Also I noticed the play on Carl/ Catsup and Karl/ Ketchup…lol

I prefer Del Monte brand myself. And I go through a lot myself. I’ve got at least two extra bottles in the cabinet. At my market, though, the small bottles are the better buy.

@ 14 - But would you answer if someone called you “Cat” by mistake? ;-)
