I think he is using Pig to show that his father-in-law's love will just keep passing on to others, through the people that knew him.

I didn't think he was saying that he based Pig on his fil, but that he (perhaps intentionally, perhaps unconsciously) gave similarly loving qualities to the character of Pig that he admired in his fil.

Rainey - I don't think the comic is saying that Pig is based on Stephan Pastis's father-in law. I think it is saying that he wonders where all the love has gone that his f-i-l, Rick Daniels, had for everyone. When Pig hugs him he feels the love and feels the presence of Rick. Very sweet. And Nicole is right - Pig is not oafish at all. Innocent and naive, yes.

Who would have ever thought that Pig was based on an actual person in Steve Pastis's life?

I thought this was a very sweet comic, and it was nice to see that side of Steve.

Pig is not offish in the least, he has an enormous heart and love for everyone around him. He is certainly naive in a way that even surpasses the naievite of Opus in Bloom County. I aways feel the need to protect Pig from the world.

I thought it was sweet, too. Though I was cynical like yellojkt and reread it to make sure I didn't miss the bad pun.

Then I thought, wait a darn minute - who could EVER miss one of Pastis' bad puns? :)

Yeah, Pig might not be particularly brilliant (sometimes he's unbelievably stupid) but he's definitely one of the nicest characters on the comics page these days. This was sweet and understated, not at all sappy. Major props to Pastis for daring to be something other than silly.
