Friday Afternoon Trifecta
Cidu Bill on Feb 5th 2010
I was going to call this a Frifecta, but then I realized that didn’t actually make any sense. Anyway, Nicole writes: “I have a three in one … an lol, a ewwww and a CIDU. I get the joke … and any comic that makes fun of Ann Coulter is an LOL in my book. The EWWWWWW is ’she is opening her mouth.’ The PIDU (Part I Don’t Understand) is why unicorns and rainbows ? This would work just as well with regular horses on a ranch — why the storybook scene?

Maybe Ann has a tatoo of a unicorn?
Darren S. A. George Feb 5th 2010 at 12:29 pm 2
Ann Coulter’s opinions and statements have as much to do with reality as unicorn droppings?
Elyrest Feb 5th 2010 at 12:42 pm 3
I’m curious why Kit’s comment #1 is dated about 17 hours before CIDU Bill posted the comic. Did he go back in time?

I’ll bet most Coulter-bashers haven’t read anything of hers, they just follow the party line. This joke, as most of are, is about her looks, rather than her ideas.

paperboy -
Here are a few quotes by Ann Coulter: http://www.washingtonmonthly.com/features/2001/0111.coulterwisdom.html
There’s plenty more out there, but that’s enough for me to see that she’s a bigoted, hate-filled witch. I dont’ give a unicorn’s ass what she looks like.
marie Feb 5th 2010 at 01:10 pm 6
Oh, and about the joke. It’s not about her looks. Coulter’s face is tattooed on the unicorn’s ass so that her mouth is the unicorn’s anus. Therefore, when the unicorn takes a dump, it looks like Coulter is spewing crap. It’s a metaphor, see.
Winter Wallaby Feb 5th 2010 at 01:15 pm 7
Um, unicorns because horses can’t talk. Duh.
Rainbows because it just rained. Come on, people, this is pretty basic stuff.
mkilby Feb 5th 2010 at 01:16 pm 8
@ Nicole (0) - I think the drawing would have worked even better on a ranch (rather than in “Fairy-Tale-Land”), because there would have been an implicit play on the phrase “straight from the horse’s ass”. Substituting “unicorn” there just doesn’t work. As for the “butt” of the joke, it would be interesting to know whether Ms. Coulter is really a “bigoted witch”, or whether she just plays the part to be popular with her bigoted audience.
FeelinOld Feb 5th 2010 at 01:21 pm 9
As to the second query, why Rainbows, Unicorns and Butterflys I’d suspect it’s because those are common tattoos, (I personally know 4 women with Butterfly tatts and 2 with raindows) so in a world of Unicorns, butterflys and rainbows it may make sense for the tats to be of humans…
Judge Mental Feb 5th 2010 at 01:24 pm 10
I thought unicorn and rainbows were used (in lieu of a regular horse and ranch motif) because unicorns and rainbows are popular choices for “tramp stamps”. More to the point, a favorite choice for humans when selecting a tattoo of a fantasy character is a unicorn, and a unicorn’s favorite choice for a character rooted in fantasy is Ann Coulter.
Judge Mental Feb 5th 2010 at 01:25 pm 11
You might be “FeelinOld”, but apparently are still faster than I am.
mkilby Feb 5th 2010 at 01:31 pm 12
@ Judge Mental (10) - thanks for mentioning the phrase “tramp stamp”. Several months ago I was looking for a translation of the equivalent German phrase (”Arschgeweih“), but ended up having to translate it literally (”ass antlers”).
FeelinOld Feb 5th 2010 at 01:36 pm 13
mkilby: I love it, now whenever I see one that’s going to be what I think: ‘Ass Antlers’
Kit Feb 5th 2010 at 01:37 pm 14
@ Elyrest #3 Through some freakyness of Bill’s queue, I was able to see and comment upon this post yesterday before it mysteriously disappeared, only to reappear today, comment intact :O
Molly J Feb 5th 2010 at 02:10 pm 15
Mkilby - Which is more evil?
Jordan Feb 5th 2010 at 02:26 pm 16
Reading some of those quotes - yikes. And this was the lady that ran for vice-president the other year? I’m amazed she was able to act halfway human that long to make it to the elections.
Soup Dragon Feb 5th 2010 at 02:30 pm 17
I LOL’ed at the absurdity of the situation. Pretty butterflies, a rainbow and unicorns, and then we are left to imagine the tattoo revealed as the unicorn lifts her tail (I presume it’s a female unicorn, with the lipstick). A bit Monty Pythonesque.
Cidu Bill Feb 5th 2010 at 02:58 pm 18
Well, you know what they say about putting lipstick on a unicorn…
Regarding Kit’s time travel adventure: The comic was indeed online for a couple of minutes yesterday. I’d hit “post now” instead of “hold until noon Friday,” then corrected the error almost immediately. But Kit was too quick for me.
Elyrest Feb 5th 2010 at 03:12 pm 19
CIDU Bill - No time travel? Oh shoot! Well, if you do figure it out let us know.
Nicole Feb 5th 2010 at 03:25 pm 20
paperboy #4 - you are correct …. I have never read any of her books. I have heard plenty of her vitriol as documented by Marie’s link to know that this is a very accurate representation of what comes out of her mouth.
Except for the unicorn thing … I still don’t get that
Nicole Feb 5th 2010 at 03:26 pm 21
Winter Wallaby #7 Mr Ed talked
Nicole Feb 5th 2010 at 03:28 pm 22
mkilby #8 I thought the phrase was ’straight from the horse’s mouth’.
paperboy Feb 5th 2010 at 03:41 pm 23
Nicole#20- I haven’t, either, but she has a regular column on Townhall.com, and I’ve found her to be a (intentional) hoot. You may very well dislike her positions, but be careful about making assumptions about a person based on what critics feed you. But I don’t want to turn this into some kinda political forum, so: Nicole#22- Ha !! and I think the “nicey-wicey” unicorn and rainbows setting is to balance out the grossness of the horse ass bit.
MB Feb 5th 2010 at 04:18 pm 24
The joke would be funnier with Keith Oberman
Kamino Neko Feb 5th 2010 at 05:22 pm 25
No, that was Sarah Palin, who is neither as smart, nor as evil as Coulter.
Frank the curmudgeon Feb 5th 2010 at 08:43 pm 26
Obviously the mare didn’t recognize Madam Pelosi.
Nicole Feb 5th 2010 at 08:48 pm 27
paperboy #23 I am not sure why you think my opinion of Ann Coulter is based what on her critics say. My opinion of her is based on what comes out of her mouth, not her metaphorical pen. I have heard her speak with my own ears and I find her disgusting. Her prose may indeed be intentionally humorous, but as believe I said I think this comic is a accurate representation of what comes out of her mouth.
Your explanation of the Unicorn maybe correct … but is unsatisfying
Cidu Bill Feb 5th 2010 at 08:52 pm 28
Paperboy, I’ve read at least two of her books. Does that qualify me to bash her?
George P Feb 5th 2010 at 09:09 pm 29
Finding anything she says funny is really all I need to know about someone.
Winter Wallaby Feb 5th 2010 at 09:33 pm 30
I haven’t heard her talk or read her books, nor do I plan to. I’d question whether I really need more information to dislike her. It’s certainly worth remembering that people’s enemies can always quote them out of context, but for some of her quotes, unless she immediately followed them by saying “. . . to give an example of what a crazy person might say,” it’s difficult to think of a context in which she would seem sane.
I have skimmed some of the intro and dusk jacket of her books, but what I saw didn’t encourage me to read more, because unlike Nicole and Bill, I’m not a masochist.
paperboy Feb 5th 2010 at 10:09 pm 31
CIDU#28- “Paperboy, I’ve read at least two of her books. Does that qualify me to bash her?” YES!! That’s my point! It’s those that only follow what others say about her that I’m talking about. I’ve only read her columns for a few weeks, so I’m not going to defend her to my death, I’m just saying after all the Liberal teeth-gnashing I read about her, I expected more outrageousness. I just don’t find her the polarizing figure that she’s made out to be. I used to be a died-in-the-wool Liberal (got all Al Franken’s books; still love ‘em), but now I’m just finding it’s not all black-and-white. (And George P#29- I can just picture you flipping your white-boy dreads back as you say that.)
Elyrest Feb 5th 2010 at 11:41 pm 32
paperboy (31) - If you have only been reading her column for a few weeks I don’t think you really have a grasp on just how vicious this woman is. One problem I have with her is that I do think she is intelligent and knows exactly what vile bile she is spreading and gets joy out of her nastiness. That’s evil.
PepperjackCandy Feb 5th 2010 at 11:45 pm 33
Because horses don’t get tattoos?
Mark M Feb 6th 2010 at 12:05 am 34
Speaking of vicious, it seems Far Left Side gets here often.
AMC Feb 6th 2010 at 12:23 am 35
I think the reason that it is unicorns, and not set on a ranch with horses, is to avoid the confusing equine related associations - like:
Ann Colt-er.
“Hey Ann, why the long face?”
Or that Beach Boys song, “Bar - Bar - Bar, Barbaro-Ann.”
Jeff S. Feb 6th 2010 at 01:23 am 36
I haven’t read any of her stuff, but I have seen her in several interviews. As was stated above, she really needs to use the phrase, “…to give an example of what a crazy person might say…” before everything she says. I know she says these thing mainly because she’s being interviewed by the ‘liberal’ media, but she takes things WAY too far.
Igelino Feb 6th 2010 at 08:33 am 37
I agree with soupy #17. I don’t know any Ann Coulters. When I looked at the comic, the picture of rainbows and butterflies and a girl unicorn with it’s tail raised and other girl unicorns looking up its butt made me snort. lol
George P Feb 6th 2010 at 08:43 am 38
You are just verifying my assumption, paperboy, and in an Ann Coulter way, too. She calls names and attacks individuals rather than deal with issues.
She’s not stupid; she’s just without morals. Like Limbaugh, she knows she can get rich pandering to closed-minded bigots.
The Bad Seed Feb 6th 2010 at 09:24 am 39
24 hours later I still can’t explain it, but for some reason the unicorns et al push this strip over into ROFL territory for me, instead of seeming funny but kinda mean (although I certainly have no love for the person in question). But don’t unicorns poop out rainbows?
Elyrest Feb 6th 2010 at 12:17 pm 40
“But don’t unicorns poop out rainbows?”
Oh, Bad Seed now I’ve got the image of multi-color turds coming out of Ann Coulter’s mouth. That ain’t pretty.
Morris Keesan Feb 6th 2010 at 07:56 pm 41
The rainbows and pastel unicorns are meant to trigger an “aww, how cute!” response, to resonate with the unicorn saying “ooh, how cuuute!”
