    It’s a redneck joke. You know you’re in redneck country when the deer crossing signs are full of bulletholes, because (cheap joke) they’re too drunk to tell the difference between sign an deer or (somewhat more serious) gotta burn off the spare ammo once they’ve shot their limit.

    I’d say it has something to do with the fact that he missed the actual drawing of the deer, but shot all around it.

    Also, not one of the projectiles has hit the deer on the sign. Ha ha, you’re ready to hunt.

    The deer is safe because Thor is going to have to wait for the pickup truck that goes with the sign - wait for tens of thousands of years, that is.

    I think the actual joke, here, has nothing to do with the final speech balloon, but the writer may have just wanted something to be there. The joke is the reveal of exactly what he was using for target practice. The reader expects to see a hay bale or, in this case, a rock or something, but instead sees an anachronistic deer crossing sign.

    At least his shots seem to have all hit the sign itself! That’s accuracy but not precision, right?
