This isn’t synchronous, but it certainly fits the theme:

Re the “Ha! Birthday!” one, this is one time when reducing the image actually makes the meaning clearer. I like the Far Side-esque vibe of the “the funny stuff happened before the reader got here” dynamic.

Though these weren’t CIDUs, both of them are making me wonder if I’m missing something. I get the idea of both jokes, but they both leave me thinking, “Is that it?”
I mean, is “I was edited” a reference to any specific event? And why a hammer, exactly?

Furry–a vocation school is like a trade school where one learns job-specific, usually physical, skills, such as carpentry.
The first one was very puzzling for me for a long time, as I thought the big fish was supposed to be a letter itself, and has swum off. His exaggerated belly (which I get now means that he ate the other fish) just added to the confusion.
The Montessori school one literally made me lol.

furrykef, “I was edited.” just means that part of his message had been eliminated. If the fish in the second comic were shaped like a saw, would you ask “Why a saw, exactly?”

The green fish took a very skilled bite to pluck out just the right one of the 5 in the line part of the “P” so it looked like an “!”. The specific event was a HAPPY BIRTHDAY! ’sign’ made out of living fish.

The vocational school one made me LOL, while I considered sending the birthday one to my mother. She got a LOLCat instead. (Whadya mean I give cheap gifts? I give only cheap jokes! Sheesh.)

In other words, no, I wasn’t missing anything. The joke just seems very lackluster if it’s not a reference to current events or something, and “I was edited!” is a slightly odd way of phrasing it (which is why I thought it might be such a reference).

Yep. I guess it’s because it bears little resemblance to reality to me; I mean, fish aren’t exactly known for traveling in the shape of a tool or even any particularly interesting formation. It reads to me as if the cartoonist was thinking, “OK, I want to make a pun on ’school of fish’, so I’ll just stretch the joke as much as necessary to make it work.”
But maybe that’s just me. *shrug*
